The scene from this Peter Lorre classic horror film is one of my real favorites. Lorre is obsessed by Yvonne (played by Frances Drake), who is a performer in a Grand Guignol theatre. Her character is tortured by first being stretched on the rack, then the hot iron is brought out. It is put in front of her frightened face and then lowered onto her body. We don’t see it touch her, but heavy plumes of smoke wash over her as she screams and confesses. An excellent performance by a beautiful victim. I wish all hot iron scenes were this good.
