LLL wrote: Mon Jan 05, 2026 6:53 am I recommend the reading of a short story by Leopardi, "the calendar seller".
Pls explain in laymen words the gist of it. I had countless tons of what looks like literary AI slop. I mean female authored Sci-Fi. The horror.
For such a good friend, here is the whole text.

Venditore
Almanacchi, almanacchi nuovi; lunari nuovi. Bisognano, signore, almanacchi?
Passeggere
Almanacchi per l’anno nuovo?
Venditore
Sì signore.
Passeggere
Credete che sarà felice quest’anno nuovo?
Venditore
Oh illustrissimo sì, certo.
Passeggere
Come quest’anno passato?
Venditore
Più più assai.
Passeggere
Come quello di là?
Venditore
Più più, illustrissimo.
Passeggere
Venditore
Signor no, non mi piacerebbe.
Passeggere
Venditore
Saranno vent’anni, illustrissimo.
Passeggere
Venditore
No in verità, illustrissimo.
Passeggere
Venditore
Signor no davvero, non tornerei.
Passeggere
Oh che vita vorreste voi dunque?
Venditore
Vorrei una vita così, come Dio me la mandasse, senz’altri patti.
Passeggere
Venditore
Ecco, illustrissimo. Cotesto vale trenta soldi.
Passeggere
Ecco trenta soldi.
Venditore
Grazie, illustrissimo: a rivederla. Almanacchi, almanacchi nuovi; lunari nuovi.

She reminds me of a current political figure from the state of Georgia that was once a fantasy victim for me. But it seems she's no longer drinking the kool-aid, so this will be for past transgressions only.

I was persuaded that with the modern marvels of autotranslate and the ancient marvels of his extensive knowledge JD would have grasped the gist of Leopardi's short. Apparently not, so here I spoil Frog's thread again with a very short synopsis.

Basically it's a dialogue between an ambulant merchant selling calendars for the new year and a potential buyer (a thinly disguised Leopardi). The seller speaks about how good and happy the new year will be. The buyer asks him if it will be like last year. Much better, is of course the answer. Then will it be like one of the past ten years? The past twenty? No, much better. Which one of those years would the merchant hope to relive? None, is his perplexed answer. And to relive his whole life? Ah, if only that was possible. But to relive it exactly identical, day by day? No, of course not.

The calendar is bought, wishes are exchanged, the merchant goes back to selling and proclaiming how much better next year will be.

Basically, the exact opposite of Nietzsche.

I had not thought about that, nor was it my intention to suggest such a thing, but now that you mention it, I think you might be right. As to her no longer drinking the kool-aid, I have my doubts, it might just be a convenient political change of skin.

He needs to send his lackey out for more cigarettes. Looks like he's about out of them.

I must say that you get a much better return for your money using cigaretes this way, rather than smoking them. With the price of cigs today, it's almost as expensive to get cancer as it is to treat it later.

Luckily there is a gas station right around the corner from the interrogation center. Except for the second hand smoke, I think you have a point. It also has the advantage of saving on expensive torture equipment. Simple and less costly, is best. 8-)
