Ducking Stool

Whores caught sneaking aboard old-time sailing ships might face being ducked from the yardarm. This involved being stripped and hoisted up onto one of the crossarms of the rigging. They would then be dropped into the sea from this great height. Striking the water with great force would blast water into their bodies. They would also plunge deep into the water. It could take some time for their bodies to rise to the surface. When they came up gasping, they would be dragged along behind the ship for a while before being hoisted back up to the yardarm. This would be repeated 3 or 4 times.

The same punishment was also applied to women who tried to disguise themselves as men or boys in order to enlist. These women would cut their hair short and bind their breasts. When they were exposed, they would be dragged on deck and stripped and ducked at the yardarm.

The location for a ducking stool would usually be the filthiest pond in the village. Such a pond would be selected for the maximum humiliation of the victim.

Ducked over head and ears. The stench alone would make her ill.

Held under until she was forced to take a gulp. She would come up gasping, coughing and spewing.

Sentenced to the Ducking Stool in mid winter she shivers as she is plunged into icy water, then held dangling in the frigid breeze.
