Inert gas hypoxia (helium,nitrogen, and other gases can be used) is the recommended method offered by Derek Humphrey in the book Final Exit as the most merciful and reliable form of self euthanasia. As the inert gas isn't carbon dioxide, which your lungs detect as a drowning condition if it builds up too much, lack of oxygen simply causes your body to shut down in a pretty orderly fashion and most people who accidentally die by hypoxia don't even realize they're in trouble before they lose consciousness.
