The First Train

Post by cluseb »

Back before the Black August Crash, I had started a thread called; The First Train, I didn't finish it in September when we came back, but I'm going to give it another go. It's a true story and the victims deserve some recognition for their suffering.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________

.....................................................P.S.A.
The only thing worse than Auschwitz, would be if the world forgot such a place ever existed.

.....................So here's an illustrate HISTORY LESSON Rated R:

..................................____________________________________________________

The first official transport of Jews to Auschwitz was 997 young women and teenage girls.

Out of respect for the actual victims, none of the characters in this article represent any real individuals on the train. All names are fictional and identification numbers will be pixelated, the characters are composite and represent all the young women on the early transports, the experiences endured ( in this piece) are generic to early arrivals.

How to read this story:
Large yellow = story narration
Large white = character speaking
Dark orange sml. = my comments for other contributors

also;
I'm using ( " ) for spoken out loud
and using ( :: ) for thought

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Slovakia joined the Axis powers in 1940. The quisling government of the Slovak Republic began implementing draconian laws against the Jews, including revoking their right to be educated past the age of 14,
and forced them to sell their businesses to Christians.
In nineteen forty-one, the Slovak government negotiated with Nazi Germany for the mass deportation of Jews to German-occupied Poland. The Slovak government would organize the transports and pay 500 Reichsmarks per Jew for the cost of resettlement.
Town criers announced a new order — all unmarried Jewish women 15 to 36 were to report to the school gymnasium town hall or fire station in two weeks to register.

For aesthetic purposes, I've exaggerated the period of forced nudity.
Notices went Up.

They were told they would be registering for three months of work in a shoe factory, and that it was their patriotic duty to help in the war effort.

But when they showed up to “register...”

Local officials and military personnel presided over the check-in, but among them was a man in the uniform of the SS, the Schutzstaffel (Protection Squadron). They thought it was strange there was an SS officer there.
After their names were taken down,

a doctor ordered the girls to strip for a health exam. Undressing in front of strange men was unheard of, but who were they to question authority?

It was not a real exam. No one was rejected.

To be historically more accurate, this is what they probably looked like, both ethnically and in age, the notice specified unmarried women sixteen and up, there would have been pressure on young women to get married so the percentage of unmarried women would decrease rapidly as their ages increased. Also, they all knew who else would be there and this would be an opportunity to catch up (on gossip) since they would know most of the others they would have dressed up.

The rural peasant girls were not exempt.

They too were shocked when they were forced to strip in front of Slovakian and Nazi officials.

Then herded out to waiting wagons,

And carted away.

In an abandoned barracks in Poprad a transit camp had been opened.Image.

In the cities and towns the girls were loaded into passenger trains.

From the small villages transport was a little cruder.

As the train pulled out of the station, some of the older girls tried to buoy the younger ones. They thought they were going on an adventure, most knew each other.

Everybody started singing the Slovak national anthem when they saw the Tatra Mountains.

Pardon the lack of apparent peril, but you know better than them what peril they're in.

As the truck backed into a courtyard the anxious cargo hoped this was their shoe factory but feared that was all a lie.Image

They had arrived at the transit camp to join others being collected, it didn't look like anyone was making shoes.

Truck after truck throughout the afternoon.
At this point, they were starting to realize they were prisoners.

I think one should not use pictures and scenes of the extermination of the Jews in such stories. this is tasteless.

The story is true, and not a well-known one, hopefully, the viewer will take that away with them ( I know that's a strech given the fans of this site ).
But this is going to be one the tamest topics on the site, with the exception of the exaggerated period of forced nudity it`s going to follow the history anally.
That being said, I admit it exploitive, but so was "Ilsa of the SS" or "Nazi love camp no.7"
Anybody looking for torture is going to find it boring, the nightmare is the overall experience.

This is only my second attempt to colorize a black-and-white photo. I tried 5 times to get the pink dress right.
The two girls in blue are unidentified and thus their fates are unknown, the other three were on the train, and did not survive.

From left: unidentified girl, Anna Herskovicova, unidentified girl, Lea Friedmann, and Debora Gross
Photo was taken 1936

This site is not the most appropriate place for this work, but the ability to mix images and text here makes it perfect for my storytelling style.

Here`s something in the same vein on youtube.

Also, you may consider: The Christians in the arena 2000 years ago or the witch trials of 500 years back, they were real people who endured a holocaust too, and are exploited here as well not to mention the natives, although the American narrative paints the victims as the bad guys on this site.
