After what you wrote, I realized that actually did not finish Tokyo Vice. I must have only gotten through about 2/3 of it. The last part seems intense. I am going try it again.yyy02 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 26, 2022 3:44 pmYeah, TV was quite dark, especially what happened to Helena. You get the feeling that Jake knew what happened to her, and what would happen to her if she pursued "looking into it", given her strong personality. It was almost inevitable. He still likes to think she is alive somewhere, but who is he kidding? But maybe that saying that she's alive in his memories?hornythumb wrote: ↑Mon Dec 26, 2022 10:11 am...so glad you found TV worth reading. I know it is not quite delightful, but rather insightful and somewhat sobering.
Have you been to Tokyo? I was there some years back with professional colleagues, and we would venture out at night in "Rapongi" (SP?), a major nightlife area. For the life of us, we could not figure ourt the activities in the bars we were allowed into. Apparently, in a few the guy sang karaoke to a women trying to woo her? We only drank, nothing else. Many of the clubs had handwritten signs on the door stating Japanese Only. So we never knew about those clubs...
It's strange that through all those pictures that the Yakuza guy had of her tortured body, Jake would still want something to positively ID her. That says something of how badly she was mutilated, and you just know that it happened while she was still alive to feel it.
It reminds me of another book that horrifed and fascinated me at the same time. I don't recall the title, but it was also set in Japan and involved the torture of a young Western girl at the hands of the Yakuza. IIRC correctly, part of the prose involved pulling all her teeth, then proceeding with an electric drill, before she eventually died under torture. I believe the torture was punishment for something her mother did, but memory is hazy.
It was as bloody and violent as the Cartels... it shook me then, and recalling it still bothers me. I suppose a segment of the Forum likes that sort of thing... On my dark days, I get into it, but otherwise it repulses me.
All women fascinate me. There's just something about the curves.
Some things I love about Japanese women is that 1) they are not into tattoos (anti-Yakuza sentiment there), (2) are resistant to breast enlargement (though I think I see some nicely done examples making their way into JAV), and (3) are also resistant to navel jewelry. Nothing but beautiful skin.
Or maybe I should thank the Japanese producers and the JAV market for the reluctance to do those things.
No, have never been to Tokyo, the closest I came was a layover on a military flight through Japan. Kudos to you for living it, though you couldn't access some of it, being gaijin. Not for lack of trying eh?![]()
As for
"to you for living it, though you couldn't access some of it, being gaijin. Not for lack of try"
We were a group at a professional conference and there would be peer pressure not to try. On my own I doubt I would have tried. I had to be on better behavior those days and still am. There are boundaries but I have surely pushed em to the edge back in the day.
