I wish it was prior experience, but sadly that's not the case. My curiosity was up so I Googled it. The only square cement blocks I found were the 8x8x8's I mentioned. That photo is 40 plus years old and it looks like the block might be a bit larger than what's available now. I'm sort of a detail oriented guy, and for me little things like that add to fantasy/realism of the scene.
Of course, being the sadistic bastard that I am, that rope would be replaced with barbed wire and a second block added to it.
