Ceffyl Pren, Wooden Horse
Ceffyl Pren, Wooden Horse
In Wales there was a traditional, ritual shaming punishment known as Ceffyl Pren or the wooden horse. Among those who were victims of this communal discipline were women who were "no better than they ought to be". A mob of young village men, many of whom had likely sampled the favors of their victim, would show up at their door. The victim would be dragged out into the street, often divested of their garments, mounted astride a wooden figure of a horse, and carried throughout the entire village to be jeered at by the populace. After such a treatment a young woman, bruised and battered by such rough treatment could not remain in the village. They would disappear in shame to make their way, in whatever manner they could, someplace where their reputation would not follow them.

A bit of Rough Music to send her on her way. Perhaps a coat of tar.
Re: Ceffyl Pren, Wooden Horse
Crop her hair to advertise her shame for some time to come, wherever she might go.

Dragged out into the street, her ride on the Ceffyl Pren is about to begin.

The wooden horse, forced between her thighs. Carried through the lanes of the village, screaming in agony and terror.

Re: Ceffyl Pren, Wooden Horse
Yes, sometimes they did. A good way to shame women of light virtue in many times and places.
