There are ways to simulate reality without doing actual harm (take for example the interrogation scene in "SALT", Angelina Jolie is put through the wringer in a very credible way). But I guess that requires large budgets and, above all, being able to shoot more than one take, plus good choreography. That is not the case of the producers that work on porn. If Alex from Cruel World were able to pull something like that he would have to charge an exorbitant amount for his customs and have a crew of technicians.

I agree, I was not disparaging Alex's efforts, as you say they are good enough for what he has at hand, and his actresses do a pretty good job. What I meant is that some levels of verisimilitude will never be achieved without resources that are not available to most producers. PKF, for example, used to pull off some nasty stuff, some of it a little bit too fake theater blood but still passable. That is until they declined.

Yeah, I got you and I do agree. In a perfect world we would have a big budget with state of the art fx for a medium length torture video. Many scenes in mainstream movies are very good and quite a turn on, but they just don't last long enough, and then there's the usual rescue buzzkill.

Totally agree.
Plus I think if it gets too real looking, they stand the chance of being censored/banned, or shutdown by the credit card companies. And I think most of them operate on shoestring budgets, maybe akin to "student" films? When you figure that even most porn doesn't need all the props and makeup that torture videos use.
And everything bought for a project needs to be amortized (?) over a number of different projects to become cost efficient. Look at it from the business standpoint.
