Scatology is the study of shit or a preoccupation or attraction to shit; while eschatology relates to the end of times and preoccupation with such matters, which mostly has produced bullshit predictions of the end and when it will arrive. They come from Greek skatos and èskatos respectively. My knowledge of ancient Greek however falls a bit short to establish if there was a link. Maybe the "last" which in èskatos has a positive meaning of extreme, final, ultimate originally comes from skatos and last as meaning lowest, least noble?
