A low caste woman is accused of witchcraft. The court of village elders convict her. She is stripped naked. Her body is smeared with charcoal. Her hair is tonsured. A necklace of old shoes is hung around her neck. Then she is paraded through the entire district on the back of a donkey. The villagers beat her with sticks along the way. Finally she is left hanging by her wrists from a tree. She will stay there until someone takes pity on her and cuts her down.

Ducking or Swimming a witch was a popular test for witches long after official witch trials ended. A woman suspected of being a witch would be stripped naked by a mob and tied up in a peculiar way. Their right thumb would be tied to their left toe and their left thumb to their right toe. In this state they would be unable to move in any effective way, either to swim or to try and sink or to protect their modesty. They would be heaved out into the deep water of a pond or stream. The mob would watch their futile efforts struggling in the water. When the mob decided that they were floating and guilty or sinking and innocent, they might pull them out. There were many cases of old women drowning in such cases. The mob then might face charges of murder or manslaughter. if a younger women survived this treatment there would be no such notice of the case by the authorities. When a witch drowned the mob were like a cat who finds the captured mouse is not moving anymore. They would wonder, in disappointment what had happened to their plaything. If she survived, she would find herself dragged out on the muddy bank to face whatever additional treatment the mob chose to inflict.

In some countries with still-strong religious groups, the idea of witchery has re-asserted itself. Women like Katie Dee who have the clear ability to entice men who are moral and religious into sinful thoughts must be removed. The concept remains the same as in inquisition times, but the technology is dramatically more powerful. Sometimes it's not necessary even to remove them from the torture chamber for burning (which can be rather embarrassing in a world of international media). The sinful bitch need never leave her bonds at all until time for disposal of the remains.
