“You wish to be spared from torture?” he asked, in his accented voice, and she looked up again, her blue eyes meeting his dark ones. He was a handsome man, in his mid thirties, with black hair, and a short, well groomed beard. His skin was tanned and weathered, and there was a cruel glint in his eyes.

“Yes,” she said, her voice barely more than a whisper. “I wish to be spared torture.”

The Sultan laughed, and said, “Then you will have to learn to please me, and learn it quickly.”

The young queen, whether out of desperation or because she had already given up on life and had nothing to lose, defiantly replied, “You will never possess me. You can do what you will with my body. But I will never give you my heart and soul.”
