Not long ago, but before all the frenzy for Pygmalion, Jac took a trip to the location for Seditiosa, a solo act except for the hired driver who took the long road, a back road, through areas that Jac didn’t know. The famed director was annoyed for most of the trip to the terrain where he plans to bring havoc to three beautiful ladies. The car journey took about 45 minutes, because of the driver’s unfamiliarity with the city. Jac became acutely aware that the poor fellow was not a paceño (from La Paz), his accent betrayed him.

When they finally arrived to the Alkamari Eco Resort Jac was relieved. His friend Miguel, the owner, was there, big hugs, and then off he went to talk to Miguel’s ex wife, who is the manager of the place. She was very please to see him, they talked about different things and then Jac explained to his hostess what he needs. She was very impressed with the film idea, the Femenine Christ. She said it gave her goose bumps. A good sign.

Then the lady mentioned her daughter, who is in college in NY, who saw what Jac did in that place back in 2013, a great scene in Dead But Dreaming, Mila’s Crucifixion. The daughter was amazed with that work, and would’ve love to be part of it. Jac mentioned that he needed more people for the new film. Carmen, that’s the manager’s name, said “I’ll talk to her, she might come for this“. The daughter is 25 and a poet.

Image

The subject of poetry came into the conversation, when Carmen mentioned that her daughter wrote something related to spaces, the poetry of spaces, and in the young woman’s case, the claustrophobic spaces in NYC, the tiny, closet size apartments, high price tiny apartments.

The poetry of spaces concept was in Jac’s mind when a short time after his conversation with the helpful manager, he took a nice long walk through the location, capturing more of the poetry of the space in his mind and his cell phone and… yes, getting inspired by it.

Jac encountered many issues during his walk, a lot of them technical, but there was one central subject he was becoming aware of and which goes into the main structure of the story.

As Jac walked through the different areas of the location, choosing those with the potential of being the places where the different sequences will happen, he became aware of one particular aspect of his exploration.

He began his journey from the top, where he already decided the market place will be set, all the way to the bottom of the hills where many of the areas for the different sequences are located, including the possible site of the crucifixion.

Image

If he sets the beginning of the film at the place where the thinks the crucifixion can be set, then the Crucified Three would walk from that point, all the way up to the market where they will be arrested to then be taken down to the place of the crucifixion, in other words, the film would be about their journey.

At the beginning of the film Yahel and her companions will encounter a group of people about to stone a woman and the Crucified Three intervene.

A few meters from the area that Jac thought could be the place of the crucifixion, there was some kind of hole in the ground. A perfect spot for a stoning. He envisioned the woman being dragged to the spot, pushed in there and about to be stoned to death when Yahel confronts the people. He imagined a pile of rocks on the side of the hole.

Image

Is that where the film begins? Jac thought. Maybe something could happen before that scene. He looked back to where he was thinking setting up the crucifixion area at the border of a cliff with the view of a rocky hill on the other side. That could be a good starting point.

In this scenario, Yahel and her companions appear in the area from a pathway beneath the cliff and they come across three or four tall tree trunks, three of them empty, one has a crossbar hanging, nails on the extremes, blood around them. Below the cross there are skulls, dogs feeding on bones, and an overall a ghastly sight and at that point Yahel has a ‘vision’.

A nice opening scene before the ‘stoning’ sequence, Jac thought.

Image

Jac walked from the ‘crucifixion site‘, going pass the ‘stoning site’, not far from it there is a construction, normally used to keep horses, not a stable as such, but intended for that purpose. Jac saw the construction from the hill high above the area sometime before. He hadn’t seen it up close and he was curious. But now that he was in front of it, he saw its potential, as well as the problems. One of those problems is the total lack of a source of electricity anywhere near it, a problem if he were to do any shooting at night in that place.

Regardless, Jac was concentrating on the journey. The ‘stables‘ are on the road up to the market after the possible crucifixion site and the ‘stoning” area.

Image

After arriving to the crucifixion area, or calvary, and stopping the stoning, Yahel and her companions will continue their walk by the path behind the construction, all the way up to a different area, one with trees. That’s where the encounter with the possessed man could happen, the Third sequence in the story, where Yahel and her companions confront a group of people who drag a chained man down the hill with the intent of getting rid of him. She proceeds to heal him.

After taking care of the man and giving the man’s family the means to help him recover, the growing group of young women, now 7 of them, continue their walk to the market.

Image

The Crucified Three finally reach the market at the top of the walk, where Yahel will get into trouble because she picks up fights with slave traders, snake oil peddlers, religious zealots, while Judith and Magdalena take issue with the Romans killing one of them.

After the confrontation at the Market, the Crucified Three are taken down again, by force this time, all the way to the execution area, stopping first at the ‘stables‘ where the scourging of the three ‘seditious’ women and Yahel’s crowning will occur, followed by the sentencing, the carrying of the patibulum all the way to the hill of skulls and finally the crucifixion of the three women.

That’s a brief summary of how the story can go. The Crucified Three go full circle from the moment they arrived to the area until they agonize nailed up upon their crosses.

Thus, after the visit to the location, the basic story was settled. It is about what happens to the crucified three when they go to the market to acquire some supplies for their work of healing people, basically, like a road movie where the events come to them each step of the way.

In that way the story will not be a grouping of random events not connected. The journey connects them all.

Image
daelan: Really excited about the movie. Even with the low budget (unfortunately), I believe that it will be a milestone for those that enjoy crucifixion. Also, I think it has a potential to attract new members to the crux community.
A low budget film demands a lot of creativity. How to make the best production with the least of funds. In other words, where to put the little cash for best results. Tricky. I’ll discuss that in my next post.

In the meantime you can help bring up the available cash by becoming part of the production with very little.

Rivers of Blood

Image

After Yahel revealed herself as a healer in the previous episode, I mean post, the plan was to shoot a Last Meal and a Gethsemane Moment for the Female Christ and her followers.

That was scheduled for the weekend after the possessed man had been freed… and healed.

On Thursday before that weekend, part of the crew got together to plan what was ahead. There were some good ideas thrown in. Mila, was the only member of the cast present, she had a personal meeting with Jac that day.

During the meeting the decision was made to shoot the scenes previous to the Market Sequence, including the Last Super and Gethsemane scenes. Sunday was reserved to try out the crosses, which meant a lot of work because the plan was to work on the details and see if everything planned works. Everyone left happy, ready to take on the job ahead.

Image

The very next day, Jac got a message from Mila saying: I won’t be able to work on Saturday, my mom passed away last night. Jac was in shock. He immediately communicated to the cast and crew that the shooting was cancelled. He also told them of Mila’s mom passing. Everyone was sadden, of course, and all those who could went to the wake that evening and the funeral next day. Mila received all the support from the cast and crew and everyone understood the situation, including the people at the location who also expressed their sorrow.

In the middle of the week after those sad events Jac called a meeting with some of the crew and also wanted Mila to be present. They discussed the coming weekend and made decisions. What was cancelled the previous week was going to be done that weekend and the heavy scenes were planned for a week later.

On the positive part, they went over everything they need for the Market, Scourging and Crucifixion scenes and were satisfied that they have all they need.

During that meeting Jac had a heart to heart talk with Mila. He was concerned about her well being and everything she was and is going through. Mila lived with her mother who was fine, as far as Mila knew. The day of the meeting, that fateful Thursday, Mila went home, everything was normal, she prepared dinner and when she went to tell her mom that dinner was ready, found her dead in her bedroom, sitting on her chair. Mila first thought her mother was sleeping and when she tried to wake her up was shocked to learn of what happened.

She reacted and made the mandatory calls to paramedics, police, family and jumped into the obligatory and dreadful tasks of organizing what was coming, the wake and funeral.

Image

Jac helped Mila with the unexpected costs of the funeral and threw his support to her during those awful days.

At the new meeting last week, Mila mentioned that she’s completely on board to continue with the work, not only Seditiosa, but whatever else comes next. She said she needs it now more than ever, not only because of the money, but because she needs to keep busy, the busier the better.

I didn’t mention all this before because I was in shock, like everyone else, we’re family, we all are, and when one of us suffers, we all do, naturally.

We’re now returning to the work ready to give strength to Mila.

This past weekend was very productive in many fronts. Two very important sequences were completed. The Last Supper, which everyone agreed looked more like a last breakfast.

In the story the protagonists take a break just before they venture into the market, they stop to eat some bread and cheese and have some of that very good wine that probably Yahel herself makes, maybe out of water.

As they share the bread Magdalena voices her concerns, so does Deborah who expresses her fear that something could happen to her savior. In response to those fears Yahel says, if something happens to me, you can remember me when you have some wine and bread.

Image

The scene is very last supper, beautiful and sweet and the performances are great.

At one point Yahel tells the women that she has to do something and goes up a hill. Her followers continue having the wine and the bread and the cheese. Joana (Sol) wonders aloud about where Yahel is going. Judith confides that Yahel wants to chat with her ancestor Janai, who sometimes advises her without saying a word.

Yahel looks around her surroundings, she questions herself about what is coming, which she doesn’t know. It’s her Gethsemane moment. Her sweat turns into blood as she ponders about the horror coming to her, she doesn’t want to add her blood to the bloody river before her. She asks herself about who is going to write about her when she’s gone. Then comes the acceptance.

Image

With those two sequences in the can, everything is set for what is next in the production schedule, The Market Sequence, where the Crucified Three get arrested. The preparations for that incredibly elaborate sequence are ongoing right now.

The next day, Sunday, part of the crew and the main cast were at the location to figure some things out. The Market is pretty much organized. There are some ideas Jac came up with, like the selling of a slave woman and for that he needed to see about where the slave would be in relation to the place.

The team went to the market area and Jac placed Ligia, who plays Deborah, in front of a post in the spot for the slave, which is in the center of the large field, he had the others walk to her. The slave will be chained to that post, Yahel and company will rush there to confront the slave seller and attempt to free the unfortunate woman, that’s what they do. That’s the moment in the story when all hell will break loose.

Image

Jac wanted to see how much of the area was in frame from behind the post. It was working.

After the confrontation at the market the three will be arrested and soon after they will suffer the scourging. Will it happen right then? In public? In private? Those were the thoughts Jac was indulging in at that moment, and because of it, the enthusiastic group went to check the possible places where the scourging could take place.

One possible spot is, of course, the interior of the construction I mentioned before. But, if the scourging becomes public, Jac wanted to take a look at the possible scenarios. One of them is the center of the construction’s roof, it has a nice post in the center holding the canopy like structure on top. Yahel took her position in front of the wood.

Image

Another interesting area on top of the construction is where the three women will be presented for sentencing, at the edge of the terrace like roof which looks like a good stage for sentencing.

There are posts holding the large wooden ceiling which can be used for the scourging as well. Jac positioned the ladies in the areas where they could suffer the scourge in front of everyone. That possible scenario is something he’s thinking about. Should they be scourge in public view? Should Yahel be crowned in public as well, as a staged mockery? A cruel mockery of the queen wannabe?

Image

All of that happened at the end of the day. The main reason they went to the location that Sunday was to set up the crosses. The posts for the crosses had been placed in their holes a while ago, there was one small attempt to see how it would work, but as the Crucifixion Sequence approaches FAST, it became urgent and necessary to actually test the ideas. Jac doesn’t want to be trying things out the day of the shooting, it would take too long.

Image

At the same time, the famous director wanted to have the actresses carry their really heavy crossbeams the entire walk from where the sentencing will take place and walk past the market, past the Gethsemane, past the place where Yahel cast the demons, past where the three saved the woman from stoning and all the way to the hill of the skulls, and not only The Crucified Three, but their two companions as well, just in case.

The ladies carried the heavy posts all the way to the crucifixion location, a very long walk. Almost at the end of their painful journey Jac asked them to take their shoes off and continue the walk barefoot. The idea was to find out how they feel walking without feet protection on those grounds. They obliged. It was fun. They suffered a lot. Lots of complaining. It wasn’t pleasant for them, of course, the sharp stones, the needles like grass, the bugs… all of that under their soft and tender feet, pressed down under the weight of those large pieces of wood they were carrying. One of them was heard saying A giant ant bit me!

Image

After they were done with their long walk, they had to prepare for their crucifixion. The art director’s assistant measured them holding their posts, their arms across the long pieces of wood, to mark where the nails will go.

In the meantime Victor and his assistants were done with the set up for the crosses.

There were some tests made with Dani going up and down one of the posts with the help of a harness. Jac was being nice to the Art Director who took the trouble of setting it up. The harness, I mean.

Simonne mentioned that they will be naked on the cross, they can’t use a harness, but Jac decided to go ahead and test Victor’s idea with Dani. She had fun.

Image

The principal preoccupation for Jac that day was to have the crosses set up so they could hold the women safely, securely and nicely. There are some ideas in his head and in the script, different positions for each individual character, other positions for all three of them, depending on how the crosses would be finally set up.

There were some discussions as to what can be added, what works, what doesn’t work in the location.

There’s a big difference between working inside, like in the set Jac uses for many of the films, and working outside where there isn’t a lot of control over the environment.

So far it looks like it’s been settled that the crucifixions will be in the traditional way. The three victims are nailed to their crossbeams, raise up, their feet are nailed and are left to agonize.

Image

The crosses were set up for that purpose and they work. All three of the women were placed on their respective crosses, not an easy task, after each one of the courageous ladies was occupying their painful accommodations, they were left there for a long time, long enough for Jac to decide that the crosses are secure, safe, and ready. He also recorded a good number of angles to see if it all looks as amazing as his eyes saw.

While on their respective crosses The Crucified Three were joking. It’s all on video, which we’re preparing to upload to Patreon. It’s nice.

Simonne said something like, I could last a few minutes up here naked. Dani replied I could last about 20 seconds, all naked.

Since there were five principal actresses present, the five characters that appear in all of the film, Jac decide to crucified them all. That’s why they all had their own, personal, crossbeams. After the three protagonists tested their crosses, Jac had Ligia (Debora in the film) to go up there. She did.

Image

The other character, Joana, played by Sol, a beautiful 19 year old, was also in hand for some testing. The day before, when the cast was getting ready for the last supper scene, Sol showed her bare arm and said, this is a tan for me. Her arm was very white. She continued, if I were to appear naked in a scene, my body would be whiter than this. Her comment gave Jac a pause. He hadn’t mentioned to her anything about appearing naked in the film or in any film.

When all three of them were being measured on theirs crossbeams, Sol commented they are preparing me for my crucifixion. Jac took that as a message.

Soon after the protagonists and Ligia suffered their crucifixion tests, it was Sol’s turn and up she went.

Image

That’s when Victor, the Art Director who so enthusiastically worked on the crosses commented for everyone to hear Jac crucified all of them!

Jac is considering some future work in the same location, he’s even thinking of shooting some scenes now, taking advantage of everything, in one of them Ligia could be a runaway slave who is caught stealing bread at the market, she’s hungry, and …. well, she ends up crucified.

Another story is that of the Priestess of Isis who suffers the cross, another one involves a noble Roman woman accused of murdering her husband and off to the cross she goes… and so on… and there’s even a possible story for Sol, a young victim of a crucifixion.

Another possible scenario is for both, Ligia and Sol to be persecuted as Yahel’s followers, to be put to trial, scourging and crucifixion. At this point anything can happen.

In any of those possible scenarios, the beautiful new cast members of Pachamama Films are all set and willing to suffer whatever comes their way and I heard that Jac is planning to give Ligia a good flogging to test her resolve, and she will be naked. It might be happening right now.

Image

And finally, I just got word that an International Film Festival wants to do a retrospective of Jac’s and Amy’s films in November of this year and to show a new film by either of the dynamic duo, maybe Seditiosa?

I’ll have a lot more to share next week, after the Market scene is done!

Three Seditiosas Went To The Market

Image

The past three or so weeks were incredibly intense. The shooting of most of the critical scenes, the preparations for them, the tension prior to shooting, during the production and the exhaustion after each of the shooting days was hardly bearable… but the team made it!

There were lots of people in the set for most of the time, Jac was going mad, doing his job, big time, directing a bunch of actors who were having their very first experience under the famous director. All of them eager to show their best.

The shooting of the big sequences was complicated, 2 thirds of the film were shot in two weekends, that’s four days!

A sequence is normally made of one or many scenes, sometimes a sequence is shot with ONE take and it is called A Sequential Shot, where there are no cuts, just the camera moving along following the entire action. But not in our case. In the particular case of the Market Sequence, it looks like one scene but it’s actually many scenes taking place in that set, each with one particular theme. In one scene Yahel and her companions arrive to the Market and proceed to look at things.

Image

Elements of the story are developed during this sequence, we learn a bit more about Yahel and her thoughts as she talks to Judith, Magdalena, Joanna and Deborah, each responding or adding to her comments and sometimes sharing their own ideas. They even discuss an issue forbidden to women, The Temple.

And as they move on, their attention goes to a different action or scene, the arrival of a slave trader dragging his beautiful slave by her chains.

Image

That’s the moment when things take a turn for the worse. Yahel’s and Judith’s reaction when they see the slave being dragged to a post and the arrival of the Romans, who are greeted by the high priests, sets the stage for the confrontation that leads to the arrest of the three women. A very difficult moment in the production.

Until that day all the filming was pretty much standard. A nice long shot there, a medium shot here, a close up over there, going over the dialogue a few times, making sure our protagonists look as beautiful as they are, nothing really complicated.

For the Arrest Scene the cast and crew were facing a moment of action. A soldier is sent to take care of Judith who just pulled the whip away from the Slaver’s hands, offending Claudia, the Roman Aristocrat, wife of none other that the Governor, who was interested in purchasing the beautiful slave. As Judith confronts the slaver, Yahel gets busy freeing the slave. You just can’t go around freeing slaves in front of the Romans, specially if you of them has the power to have you killed on the spot.

The Arrest Scene was tricky. It is an action scene, where the soldier attacks Judith, sword in hand, dropping his spear in the process, Magdalena picks up the spear just in time, while Yahel grabs the soldier’s wrist before he stabs Judith… and in a quick action Magdalena stabs the soldier with the spear killing him. All that had to take place in an instant and it required many, many shots to have it right.

Image

As the soldier falls dead, the other soldiers quickly take over, they are about to kill the three women involved in the melee, but they are stopped on their tracks and are ordered to arrest the women instead and to dragged away to their doom.

The plan was to finish the Market Sequence on a Saturday and go into the next sequence on Sunday, but the shooting of most of the scenes before the arrest took a long time, so the soldier’s attack and the Arrest Scene were left for next day.

That Sunday was very exciting. Everyone had fun as the scene was repeated, from different angles, with two cameras running at the same time.

The soldier was killed, the women arrested and dragged away many times over. Jac was satisfied with the number of takes he had to cover all the action. The Market Sequence was finally completed and the time had come for the Scourging Sequence.

Image

After the Market Sequence was done, all hands were on preparing for the following weekend. There was a meeting of the minds to discuss some details and go over what was needed and so on.

Jac had a moment of creativity when talking to Beto first, and to part or the crew later. He was discussing the scourging and his concerns.

He mentioned the scourging in Justine, where three beautiful ladies suffer the whip. First, Amy receives 50 lashes and after that she’s taken to the stocks, where she narrates her story to her sister. When she’s done with the story, we see Bea first and then Mila taken to the yard to be flogged in front of Justine and her sister. One after the other.

Jac’s point was that in the case of Seditiosa there would be three ladies scourged, one after the other and that means that maybe it would be a bit heavy for the audience having to watch each flogging in that way. Kind of boring, maybe. Beto said, in his clever way, what about all three at the same time.… pause.

That discussion came up later, when the plans were being made to shoot the Scourging Sequence, which happened a week later and I will be discussing it very soon.

Image

I’ll have a lot more to say soon, how the last sequences of the film were shot, what happened there and more.

A Two For One Scourge

Image

All three women flogged at the same time. Jac kept that thought until part of his crew and Mila arrived for a meeting to discuss and plan the work for the next sequence. At one point the famed director was describing a bit of how the scourging scene would go, when Eric, the torturer in Maleficarum, arrived. He was included in the conversation.

Jac described the public flogging of the women, his small audience loved the idea of all three captives flogged at the same time. They discussed the dramatic possibilities, the teasing of the torturers and soldiers, the enthusiastic screaming of the people watching, the exchanges between the women, the excitement of it all.

Image

ac loved the idea more and more. Instead of a seemingly endless series of flogging moments, he was envisioning a very active, moving, dramatic staging of the scourging of the three to be crucified.

The entire sequence flashed before Jac’s eyes. The stripping of the women, being tied to the posts, all while the crowds chant. The exchanges between the women as they suffer the merciless beating, the crowds screaming, laughing, counting the lashes, in jest, some screaming Harder, Harder, some crying, and so on.

Image

They all agreed that the simultaneous flogging was a great idea for all the dramatic possibilities. Jac became convinced that the public scourging can be amazing that way, not risking a prolonged drama where while one woman is under the lash what do you do with the others. Are they sitting somewhere? Are they waiting their turn? … All that seemed dramatically slow.

And that is how it happened. After the killing of the soldier, the three protagonists are arrested and dragged to where they will begin their punishment, their public punishment.

Image

There were two tortures at hand, one of them Eric of Maleficarum fame, in charge of whipping the three women. As Casper, the head of the soldiers, counts, along with the crowd, Lictor (Eric) lashes Magdalena (Mila), while Dark (Anibal) lashes Judith (Dani) and both lash Yahel (Simonne). As the count progresses Yahel receives twice the lashes the others do. by the time the count reaches 18, Yahel had received more than 30. Lictor stops lashing her, he doesn’t want her to die, but Dark continues, for a bit. The lashing stops when the count reaches 30. the 9 or 10 lashes left will be applied later… at the cross.

Image

The shooting of the public flogging took two days of intense production, with the crowd, the effects, everything, including the long time to cover the tattoos of two of the protagonists. Most of the flogging was done on the first day. On the second day the women were flogged some more and the crowning of Yahel came into play. A dramatic, public, crowning where the crowds cry out Crown the queen!

This dramatic scene was followed by the sentencing of the three, one at a time, and the long and winding Via Crucis of the condemned carrying their heavy logs.

Image

After that incredibly intense weekend, the team began to prepare the next sequence, The Crucifixion.

I will continue telling the story of the making of Seditiosa as we work on the post production for a pre release to our supporters at the end of this month.

Thank you for the update, La Reine Margot. Truly engaging info.

I think if you wanted to, you could portray the scourging of the three as one sequence, with judicious editing, etc. You could do it in Post. But it is a moot point. ;)

edit: You could do it in Editing, a part of the Post Production process.

Just curious, are you planning to color it give more of a "gloomy" aspect to the film, instead of the bright sunshine seen in the stills?

Hail Yahel, Your Queen!

Image

The three Seditious women received less than the 39 lashes Casper ordered because the man with the know how Lictor knew better, he wants the punished to survive their ordeals for what comes next. Judith and Magdalena received 30 lashes, maybe a couple more because at times the men with the whip did not wait for the count before lashing, but Yahel was hit more than 40 times, because for each lash the others received, she got two, Lictor stopped flogging her sometime after the 18th lash was counted, his assistant continued a bit more.

After the gruesomely painful lashing, the three chastised women are lowered from their bonds to lay on the dirty ground, but almost immediately Yahel is raised up to her weaken feet to face the people gathered below the bloodied stage.

Casper orders for a crown to be brought in, a crown of thorns, of course. Behold your queen! Casper mocks Yahel, a queen deserves a crown!

The soldier brings the crown and Casper proceeds to place it on Yahel’s head, the crowd below break into an applause.

Image

Judith and Magdalena are forced to get on their knees and Casper orders: Worship your queen!

The governor and his companions walk on the stage of the theater of cruelty, they cannot hide their surprise at the sight before them. One asks: Did you order this? The Governor responds Casper has the authority to do this on his own, I’m here to sentence them.

Image

The Flogging Sequence took one full day. It was the first day of July when it happened. The Crucified Three stayed at the location for the night all expenses paid, which included dinner, a bottle of Singani, to warm up, and breakfast. There was a lot of make up work to do on them for the sequences to come the very next day.

The three protagonists plus the make up woman had a pleasant night and got up early next morning to get ready for the very important sequences: the Crowning, the Sentencing and the beginning of their long Via Crucis to their execution.

The three sequences planned for that Sunday took a very intense day of production work, with a large number of actors witnessing and participating on the events of those two days.

Image

After the intense day of work on that July 2, the work was not done as Jac had hoped, of course. The team returned to the set on the 9th day of July to complete the Via Crucis and begin the Crucifixion of the three, which was not completed that day either, they had to return a while later to finish the film and on July 29th the film was finally in the can, as they say. However, Jac did not call It’s a wrap! that day. He might declared the production done this weekend, after he is done with the assembling of the entire film.

But that long wait from July 9 to July 29 and thereafter, was a tremendously busy time for Jac who is assembling the film. This past week ended with Jac working on the Flogging Sequence and this week has seen The Crowning and the Sentencing Sequences assembled.

Image

Jac had previously put together the Via Crucis Sequence and he was more than half done with it sometime before last week when the master editor returned to the Flogging. It happens like that.

Maybe he was saturated with the images of the Via Crucis so he went back to complete the Flogging, which he didn’t, but he’s almost there, he still has to work out some details; but he moved on to the Crowning, a simpler scene, in his view, with not a lot happening, if you compare it with the intricate flogging sequence, but what happens during the crowning is very dramatic and needed careful work with the shots.

Image

After Yahel is ceremoniously and mercilessly Crowned, the other two women are pushed to their knees and ordered to ‘worship your queen‘. That’s when the Governor walks on the stage to pass sentence on the women.

The Sentencing Sequence is not a complicated sequence either, but it requieres the same care as the crowning.

Having completed the cutting of the crowning and the sentencing scenes, Jac has returned to the Via Crucis to complete it and he will jump, right after, into the Crucifixion Sequence, which will demand a lot from the overworked editor/director.

If all goes well, the entire Seditiosa movie will be ready for a fine and hopefully final cut by the end of this week. The final cut, color correction and image work, as well as the sound mix, should take an entire week, if not more.

Image

Seditiosa is in the last stretch of the post production and as the work continues, we will be setting up the pre release option for our supporters which will last a very short time.

At this point in the post production, nothing can be added to the story. What is done, is done. The work will be completed with the material that was produced, nothing less, nothing more. The result will be the final film and it will be what it will be.

I will need to address some issues bought up in many comments at some point, maybe. With high expectations come disappointments. It always happens. It happens to me when I’m expecting a movie based on a novel I love, for that movie to reflect, exactly, what my imagination created in my head from the words I read, but unfortunately it never, ever happens. Big disappointment, even if I eventually enjoy the film based on that lovely novel, but that’s a different issue.

Image

After the sentencing, all three protagonists, one at a time, are dragged down from the stage to pick up their heavy logs to begin their march to their cruel execution. That’s a matter for the next update. Meanwhile, we have used up our resources and we need to replenish them.

Via Crucis of the Crucifixa – Part One

Image

The weekend of July 2 was incredibly intense. In those two days the cast and crew worked on the flogging, the sentencing, the forcing to carry the crossbeams and the long, very long walk to the Hill of the Skulls.

Jac’s intention was to finish the entire Crucifixion Sequence during that weekend, but the sequences at work were too involved, incredibly performed by all, specially Simonne who surprised Jac with one unscripted moment.

The take begins with the two torturers carrying a weakened, tortured, Yahel away from the stage of cruelty and down a small hill to where she has to pick up her heavy log.

Image

Before the scene began, Simonne had a conversation with to the two actors playing her tortures, far from the director, where she suggested they drop her at one point during their walk down the path. They agreed and the two guys began carrying Yahel when half way down they just dropped her like a sack of potatoes. The young suffering woman rolled down the dirt and rocky path, loosing her crown in the process, in what is turning out to be an incredible moment in the film.

Image

Jac was behind the main camera, shooting the scene, when the unexpected, unscripted, moment happened. He froze in amazement seeing Yahel dropped by her tortures and rolling down, her crown falling off her head.

Jac followed Yahel with the camera as the tortured woman rolled down the hill and as he followed her, he could not avoid getting the other camera nearby into his frame. He quickly repositioned his lens to let the scene go to its conclusion.

Yahel was forced up to her feet, her crown was placed on her head again while she struggle a little but could not stand on her feet, so she went down on her knees. The tortures placed the log on her pained shoulders, forced her to get up on her feet and pushed her on her way.

Image

When the scene was completed, Jac asked the cast to do it again, all of it. The cast repeated the same action a few more times with Yahel falling and rolling, falling and rolling… That night Jac went over the shots, silently screaming Fuck, this is awesome!.

That very first take, in all its glory, is posted at Patreon, it’s fun to watch.

https://www.patreon.com/rfpix?fan_landing=true

Image

The other two condemned women, Judith and Magdalena had gone down the same path. First it was Magdalena, shortly after hearing her sentence to the cross. She was dragged down by a soldier who had no qualms in mistreating her. At the bottom of the hill, Magdalena saw the huge logs and was commanded to pick one up, she struggle at first but she managed to put it over her shoulders, got up and began her walk.

At the bottom of the hill, Magdalena saw the huge logs and was commanded to pick one up, she struggle at first but she managed to put it over her shoulders, got up and began her walk.

Image

The next to be dragged down the hill by another soldier was Judith, in both cases the crowds were screaming at them, insulting them, demanding for their crucifixion. Once Judith had the heavy log over her shoulders, she screamed in pain as she got up on her feet to begin her long and winding walk to the crucifixion stage.

Image

After The Crucified Three had done numerous takes of them struggling and picking up the logs and pushed on their way, Jac and the crew’s attention turn to the long Via Crucis Sequence, which was ALMOST completed that weekend. I will discuss the details of that sequence next time. There was no more time left that day to begin the Crucifixion Sequence and after a long discussion between the director and the protagonists, it was decided to return to the set the next weekend, the 9th of July, to work on the final scene, The Crucifixion. In Jac’s mind there was the need to work a little on the Via Crucis as well.

Jac called the day and the exhausted main cast and the exuberant extras and crew were happy that it was over, for that day. Before going walking back all the way to the resort to change their clothing, have their well earned meal, and rest a bit, the cast and crew had their picture taken.

Image

The post production of Seditiosa is going as it should, with good days, not so good days, horrible days, for all kinds of reasons. It is a stressful job. Putting all those shots together, choosing the take that works best and then looking for the one that should come right after, to create that Third Something, that gives meaning to the action, is truly a pain in the ass. It is the art of the editor. That’s where the film is at this point.

Most of the film is already past the first cut, in some cases the sound tracks have been built, music included. The work in the next couple of days is concentrated on the Crucifixion Sequence, but I will go into detail later, after I discuss the Via Crucis Sequence.

In the meantime we’re considering the pre sale of the film at a high price. Why? Because it is special. All our initial contributors will be the first to get to see the film, it will be like a pre opening of the film. The contributions range from 50 to 2,500 dollars and in some cases even more.

A meeting of the minds today, celebrating Dani’s 36 birthday, briefly discussed that issue today and that’s when the examples came as to why we should have a presale of the film at a high price.

That discussion will expand when the heads talk it out tonight and we should have a decision right after.

In other words, the pre sale will actually be a campaign for additional contributions to the film.

The Via Crucis of the Crucifixas – Part Two

Image

That second day of July was dedicated to the sentencing and the long Via Crucis for the condenmed.

Not long before this moment, Yahel and her companions had taken a long journey from the Hill of the Skulls, all the way to the market. They are beginning the journey back, but this time they have the bloody marks of the whip on their backs, the heavy logs on their shoulders, their feet unprotected and not to mention, they are exposed to all, almost naked.

One recent comment suggested that Judith, the rebel who incited the others to confront the Romans, should walk totally naked, as an example. There was such discussion during the early exchanges for the script but it was discarded. If the loin cloths are going to be taken off, it should happen when they are up on their crosses.

The walk began at the foot of the Stage of Cruelty where, after the sentencing. All three protagonists, one at a time, are dragged down from the stage to pick up their heavy logs to begin their march to their cruel execution.

Image

It is a long, very long walk, over harsh terrain, going down hill at first, for most of the walk, and going up again to reach the Hill of Skulls. The entire cast and crew were there to accompany the condemned on their walk to their cruel execution.

As the procession passed by the market, where the three were arrested, the crowd following them were teasing, screaming, calling for them to move faster. Not everyone, of course. There were those who were crying.

Image

After the market, The Three To Be Crucified walked by the hill where Yahel cured the man who was believed to be possessed by demons and by the tree where she was healing Deborah’s wounds after saving her from being stoned to death.

In that spot Yahel stumbled and was about to fall, she was helped to get back on her feet by her torturers using the whip as encouragement; the whipped woman got up only to go down on her knees again and be force back on her feet with more lashes.

There is a nice clip of this moment at Patreon

https://www.patreon.com/rfpix

Magdalena was at the head of the procession, a soldier pushing her to move on, behind her was Judith and her soldier who was just as nasty, and a bit farther way was Yahel, with the two tortures using their whips to make her move.

Image

The walk became longer for the cast because after they covered the length of each segment of the long journey, they had to stop, return to a selected point to do it all over again, for the cameras to get different angles and takes of the same situation, including the times Yahel had to fall to be whipped into getting up.

The afternoon was advancing faster than the procession, the changes in the light were giving the image an interesting look but those changes were a source of worries for the director.

After the procession passed the ‘tree’ area, they had to walk down a very narrow path and uneven terrain that made the via crucis of the three much more difficult, and painful.

Image

At the edge of that part of the walk there’s a very steep path down to the area where the three women rescued Deborah from a certain death by stoning.

Ligia, who plays Deborah, is going to be the lead in a new film where a slave suffers a three part sentence to the cross for three different crimes, stealing, running away and murdering a centurion. But that’s a discussion for the future.

As the light of the sun began to hide behind the mountains surrounding the location, the long march to the crucifixion began the journey down the steep rocky path.

Image
A screen shot during the editing, testing a color correction

During Yahel’s painful and exhausting trudge her tormentors seemed to relish whipping her to keep her on a steady step.

Beto, who plays the Governor, commented at one point that the entire shooting where he participated was simply amazing, including the long walk. He was with Fermin, who plays his sidekick and Monica, who plays his wife, far behind the crowd and they had a mesmerizing view of the entire scene, the walk, the crew working on the shooting of the takes, all the work happening in front of him.

For a shoe string budget, if that we can call it that, the production was truly amazing.

Image

As the march of pain was passing by the stoning area, it was becoming clear to Jac that the Crucifixion Sequence was not going to take place that day. He didn’t say anything to anyone because he was too busy with the camera and directing the action.

The director/cinematographer was at the edge of the Hill of skulls area capturing the cortege going up the hill, towards him. He was seeing the fast expanding shadows covering up the entire area as the sun was beginning to hide from view behind the mountains, in high contrast with the beginning of the story, when Yahel and her companions walked down that same hill on their way to the market under a bright mid morning sun.

The Crucified Three had walked down that hill, having a conversation, not imagining that they would be involved in a series of events that would take them back to this point, walking up the same hill, but this time naked, beaten, on their way to their crucifixion.

Image

When the crucifixion parade finally reached the top of the hill Jac called it a day, not before shootting some dialogue takes with Erix, who plays the high priest, because the actor was leaving for NY and there was a chance that he was not going to be around to shoot the crucifixion scene the next time around, whenever that would happen.

The whole cast and crew were told that the production wasn’t over and that they would be notified when the next shooting day would be.

Soon after the cast and crew were all enjoying their well earned meal after which the were ready to leave the location until the next time.

The day was over but the production was not. The hardest part was still in the future. A sense of uncertainty came upon Jac as he sat in the van transporting him back home.

It doesn’t matter how much experience one has, how many times one makes a movie, a crucifixion movie in particular, every production has its own problems to be resolved, its own conflicts, its own terrors, and Seditiosa was not different.

Image

The production was nearing to wrapping it up. One more day and that would be it, or so Jac thought.

I will go into the details of the production of the Crucifixion Sequence next; and maybe deal with some of the comments that came my way.

We started a Pre Sale campaign for those interested in watching the film long before its official release in November.

Our backers and supporters will have the film beginning the end of August. We’ll be announcing the details in the coming days.

Three To Be Crucified

Image

The date and time for the last sequence in Seditiosa was set for Sunday, July 9th, in the year of our lady 2023. The main cast and crew were picked up at 8 in the morning, some like Simonne, from their homes, and the large cast of over 30 gathered at one agreed upon location at 11 am where a large bus was waiting for them. The difference in time was simple, the principal cast, Dani and Mila required a couple of hours for all that make up and there was no point of having the large cast sitting there waiting.

It was expected to be a very exciting day and scary at the same time. Exciting for the big cast that, so far, had participated in most of the dramatic sequences leading to this moment. They were going to be participants and spectators of a very strange and intense passion play.

It was scary for the crew who had the responsibility to bring it all to come to pass, but most importantly it was pretty spine-chilling for the protagonists that were going to suffer the real pains of crucifixion without anything on to protect them from the windy cold of winter.

Image

Jac wanted to be done with the production that day and he was more or less confident about it. As a matter of fact he already ordered the rum, and other drinks for the wrap-up party which was planned to take place at the location at the end of the shoot that day. He could not predict what was going to happen, no one could.

The entire cast, including Erix, who did not yet go away, and the crew assembled at the location that morning, a sunny, cold and cloudless morning, and got ready for the big show.

Jac needed a few more takes of the long walk, and since they all had to go down the long path again, he took that opportunity to get some shots of the three protagonists and their soldiers on their Via Crucis down and up to the Hill of Skulls.

Image

The work was intense, there was an incredible tension in the air. The shooting started with the procession arriving to the area, where each of the women were pushed to the posts where they were going to be crucified.

One condemned at a time was pushed down to their patibulums to be nailed to the wood to then be raised up to their posts. The three suffered the agonies of the cross, under the bright sun, embraced by a cold wind coming down from the snowy mountains. The spectators watching in awe at the three women suffering the indignities of their crucifixion. Joanna and Deborah approached them at one point, there were some exchanges between Yahel and Joanna with a surprising touch that I will not reveal.

Jac made sure to have a good number of takes of the crowds watching the event, their reactions, concentrating in some of the principals including a few lines of dialogue between the high priest and his people, another with Casper.

It was cold, very cold and getting colder, the day was running fast. The nailing of each of the women and the raising up to the post, one at a time, took time, a long time.

There were so many things Jac planned to do but at one point he realized that the time was running short and he was not going to be able to complete what he wanted to accomplish that day.

Image

There’s a line in Pygmalion where Hendrix (Jac’s character) says to Vera (Mila’s character) sometimes, in cinema, things don’t happen the way one wants, this is one of those times.

He was living that impossible moment that afternoon of July 9th. He was very upset, tense, and everyone could see that. He summoned his production assistant to tell her that there wasn’t going to be a wrap-up party, not then, maybe not ever.

The sun was behind the hills, and the cold wind was increasing, Jac knew he had to finish and made sure to have some long shots of the crowd leaving the area and some very long shots of the three women suffering their agony and freezing up on their crosses. When he felt he had enough of a long shot of the Crucified Three, Jac called it a day and the women let out a collective sigh of relief, accompanied by curses and some laughter.

Image

The cast and the crew went back up to the changing area and then to have their meal. There wasn’t going to be any drinking. There was a larger group this time around, so the main table wasn’t enough for everyone. There were two other tables in smaller dinning rooms. One of those rooms, with a table for 6 with very nice views, was taken by the protagonists and a couple of the supporting actors.

Jac decided to share a table in the cold and windy outside with the two drivers. Jac thought at that moment that if the Crucified Three could put up with the freezing wind while naked and crucified, then he could certainly take some cold wind, wearing his hoody and having some food.

Maybe some people thought he wanted to share his time with the drivers, which was partly true, but the main reason he stayed out in the cold was because he didn’t want to talk to anyone in the cast or crew, he was in a terrible mood, the tension had gotten to him.

Image

One good and interesting moment came when Jac was arriving to the dining area when he came across a friend from the very old days, with whom he had a moment or two way back then and who was visiting the resort with some family. The woman was impressed to see all those actors climbing up the hill to the resort. She even got some autographs from a couple of them that apparently were known to her.

After the meal was over and all things were packed in the transportation vehicles, the entire entourage headed back to the city. Jac was silent all the way. He had to decide if he needed another day.

But the funds were short and the time was shorter.

Image

With a baby shoe string budget… or maybe a tong string budget, Jac was pulling out a big production in terms of what was involved and in a relatively short time, in less than 12 days of production, not 5 to 6 weeks, as it normally happens.

The style of production wasn’t new to him. Seditiosa is a very low budget film by any standards, yes. Films like Maleficarum, Justine, Dead But Dreaming, Olalla and even Barbazul, that ended up in festivals and were screened at movie theaters, are also very low budget films and yet they have the look of big budget movies. But each of them had more time. Maleficarum was shot in 5 weeks, of 5 days shooting per week, and there was no big Make-Up work because the protagonists, Amy and Mila didn’t have tattoos. However, none of those films needed to transport 40 people to the faraway location, nor there was the need to feed them all every one of those shooting days. There were other differences too. But the basic issues of time and money were the big concerns.

The most important and valuable part of this production was that Jac and the Crucified Three were putting their soul in the making of a daring film, and what was even more precious is that the three protagonists were truly suffering for the art. The crucifixion scene had to be as good it should be, regardless of how little money there was.

Image

There was a filmmakers conference in La Paz a few years back, where some well known filmmakers from Europe visited the Andean, landlocked country to talk about low budget films as the way to go in countries like Bolivia. The low budget films they had in mind were from 250,000 up. They didn’t know Jac, of course. He didn’t go to the conference, he thought it would be a waste of his time. Of course, if they were willing to pay him, he could teach them a thing or two.

No, producing a big film with little money wasn’t new to Jac, but this time it was more difficult for many reasons, handling the big cast, the far off location, all the details. All of that got to him that day. And now he was facing the troubling possibility that he needed another day. He alerted his principal suffering cast of that eventuality. They went pale.

He told them he was going to go over the materials he shot that day and decide if he needed another grueling day for those wonderful, beautiful and courageous women to suffer another long and cold day on the cross. I’ll discuss what was decided in our next post.

Image

We started a Pre Sale campaign for those interested in watching the film long before its official release in November.

Our backers and supporters will see the film as soon as the first cut is done, anytime soon. We’ll be announcing the details in the coming days. We’re playing with some possibilities.

After that first cut, the film will have a final cut, sound mix, color correction, subtitling, and so on. When that is done we will release it to ALL our supporters, including all those who are contributing in the pre sale campaign. We will have a date of that release during next week.

The official World Avant-Premiere will happen in the middle of November, at a film festival and soon after at a local movie house, yet to be decided.

After that the film will be in all our platforms, stores, etc.

The Crucified Three

Image

The night of the 9th of July, after the most tension filled and overwhelming day of production, Jac sat on his favorite sofa in front of the large monitor with either a Belgium or a Dutch bottle of beer in hand and his cats keeping him company, all five of them in different couches, while the computer transferred the files from the camera card to the hard disk. He was not ready to look at the material, thus he decided to watch one of his favorite shows instead.

The next morning, after his matinal duties, he began to look at the footage he shot the day before, there were some great shots, but he knew he didn’t have all he wanted or needed to complete the film and the need to go back to the location was obvious.

Image

He didn’t need to go over the clips to come to that conclusion. He knew he was not done the moment he called it a day that eventful Sunday.

Nevertheless, it was not an easy decision to make. The days after that Sunday were complicated and he was deeply aware that it was going to get even thornier.

The week of July 10th began with the assembling of the new footage and as he watched the material his thought process had already decided what he wanted to do and that he needed one more day of production. He began contacting his main cast and crew to figure out a date. All of them had some things going for that coming weekend, so there was an initial agreement for a week later, preferably a Sunday because Simonne had work on Saturdays.

Image

When the chosen week began, Dani announced that she was sick, apparently spending a very long time on the cross, naked, whipped by the freezing wind, had some effect on her health and she didn’t want to risk getting sicker that weekend. A new date was agreed upon, July 29th, and there were going to be only 6 actors: the Crucified Three, Casper and the two torturers. The idea was to concentrate on the crucified women, to do all the nasty things to them necessary to complete the Crucifixion Sequence.

Image

But the waiting time between shooting days was not wasted. From the moment the production of Seditiosa started, Jac began assembling the footage, selecting shots to build the scenes, and in most cases, editing them together. He was advancing on the post production at the same time he was extremely busy getting ready to wrap the production.

The chosen date for the last day of production was at hand. The small cast and the crew arrived to the location and began to work. The make up work on Dani and Mila to cover their tattoos takes a long time, a couple of hours, so the first to go to the Make-Up room was Simonne. The plan was to begin shooting her close shots on the cross, while Dani or Mila got ready.

Simonne was put through a number of situations for over an hour, including the nailing of her feet. The next to arrive was Mila, who then suffered at the hands of her torturers. She was raised up to her cross, her feet were nailed, and she was left to suffer some time on her cross, like Simonne before her.
Finally, Dani arrived to go over her suffering moments like Mila and Simonne did.

All the actions in the film tell part of the story, the nailing of the feet does not happen right away and there’s a reason for it, a dramatic reason. It begins a new process in the execution of the three women, one that turns into a climatic orgy of pain.

After all three had their different close shots, the moment came to do all the general shots that couldn’t be done before.

The Crucified Three were subjected to another day of extreme suffering on the cross, under the harsh conditions of the weather and it wasn’t until the sun began to go behind the hills that Jac decided the suffering women had enough. He could tell because of their pleading eyes, their trembling, bloodied and naked bodies, and the muffled cries, almost whispers, coming out of them as they suffered the anguish of their time on the cross: Are we done? The Crucified Three cried out after more torture and humiliations finally took them to end of their suffering.

When Jac said It’s done! there was a sigh of relief heard miles away. The Crucified Three were taken down from their crosses, the production assistants rushed to them with blankets to cover them from the cold wind, there was some laughter, some comments and more laughter. Dani commented If this came out good, it was worth it.

The suffering cast got on their way to wash and get dressed while the crew was busy gathering al the equipment to take it all back, including the crossbeams that were going to be taken down AFTER Jac got some shots of the empty crosses from the cliff above.

As Jac stood up on the hill overlooking the location, recording the empty crosses for posterity and for an early scene, he wondered if he had all he needed. Maybe if he had another 10 or 20 thousand to work with… or even better, another 50G … But he had what he had and he did what most producers would not manage to do even if they had those 50G extra, all that was left now was to make all that material work as a movie; however, time was rushing past, he only had a month ahead of him to complete the post production to make a good number of people happy… he made a promise, after all, even if it wasn’t really a promise.

When we launched the fundraising campaign in October we were told that the funds would be released a few days after it concluded 60 days later… that was the beginning of December, so he calculated around 8 months to produce the film, from writing the script to post production. The magic month was August. However, IndieGoGo did not release the funds until January. Oh well.

We are still running the Pre Sale campaign for those willing to support our work and would be interested in watching the film long before its official release and many wonder when are we going to finally release it.

Our backers and supporters will see the film as soon as the first cut is done, anytime soon. It is my understanding that by Sunday the 17th the final editing for the first cut will be done. During the rest of the week Jac will go over the entire film, fix what needs to be fixed, and once he’s satisfied he’ll process a clip of that raw, in a beautiful way, first cut of Seditiosa which will be shown to our backers and supporters.

After that clip is done, Jac will embark on the final cut, sound mix, subtitling, color corrections and after all that work the film will be done and ready for mastering.

After mastering we’ll prepare the assets to upload the film to our store and to the platforms where we sell and stream our films.

During all this time we are preparing the key art for the film, the information for the stores, the trailer and so on.

Our schedule looks like this.
  • Before the end of this month we will be uploading the film for first viewing for the privileged ones.
  • In October we’ll be releasing the film to those who contributed to the IndieGoGo campaign and after they all get their copy, we’ll be releasing it to our pre buyers.
  • At the end of November we will have the Official Premiere of the film at an International Film Festival and we’re considering a limited theatrical release, after that, at the beginning of December, the film will be up in our stores, platforms and so on.
