Abrisham was about to graduate from university when the US withdrawal from Afghanistan dashed her hopes. Now the Taliban had banned women from universities and she would be unable to complete her studies. She and other fellow students organized a protest and were swiftly arrested. Abrisham was tortured by the regime's goons, photos of her ordeal were disseminated to deter others like her.

The goons in Military Prison 5 were very efficient. They usually extracted information after the mandatory first 48 hours of interrogation. As they worked in shifts, the detainees would get no respite from their agonies. Sometimes it took a tad longer, that was the case with Clarisa, but in the end they all broke down. After two weeks of almost constant torture, Clarisa was finally blurting out names and addresses so rapidly that the officer taking notes could hardly keep pace.
