Is that really a thing? Does wet rawhide really shrink that much as it dries? Google time!

Google wasn't much help with the question, and the closest number I could find was around 10% shrinkage. There are variables to consider as well, including the type of hide it is and how it's dried. One thing of note was according to a leather expert, the faster it dries the more it shrinks.
An interesting point for our purposes is that you can rehydrate the rawhide to expand it, then let it shrink again to repeat the torture... again and again if desired.
