An Update on fight with spammers

After setting up the approving of new registrations ... and deleting many wannabe spammers, the frustrated fellows became very aggressive. I started getting more than 40 per day, most of them from the same toxic IPs.

Out of 20 requests 1 or 2 were legit.

I began to ban IP addresses and now I get 4 or 5 requests and half of them are legit.

In other words... I'm winning the battle!

I just wanted to brag a bit.

The picture below shows how my database looks when I check an IP address. The column with the red highlight is ONE IP address that it is super toxic, thus the highlight, the next column is the user names, lots of them and the one after that the email addresses, lots of them too ... and the flags where the Toxic IP comes from.

If I weren't doing this, the forum would be getting hundreds of spam posts every day.

Your work is greatly appreciated, at least by me, anyway. I'm sure many others too. Is there any way to block that crap without having to do it yourself every day?

Thank you!

I'm sure people appreciate the efforts.

As far as going auto pilot, it is not possible. Banning IPs and email addresses is the best way to go. The system stops attempts to register. New registrations have to be approved by someone in charge. The way I first set the forum up registrations were automatic, posts had to be approved for new users. There were tons of spam every day. Tons. From sex sites, casinos, viagra ... the usual flood.

I had to delete post after post after post. By setting up new user approval, there are no longer spam posts. New users' posts have to be approved. After three approvals, the rest go in nicely.

After banning a lot of Toxic IPs, I noticed a tremendous decrease in new registrations. Today 2 out of 3 new registrations were legit, as opposed to 1 out of 20 a couple of days ago.

Not a lot of work now. I visit the forum daily, so, no big deal.

I was discussing with Ralphus that after I upgrade the forum, I'll pass the whole managing tasks to him, but I'll stick around to help out.

I'll be upgrading the forum soon. I have to have a couple of weeks to dedicate entirely to the site because with the upgrading, lots of changes will take place. I'm working so there will be lots of new possibilities, like adding video and having Ralphus Pic Of The Day set up on top of the page. Not easy, but most likely possible.

Ok, glad everything is doable without too much trouble. Looks like it's starting to pay off.

Looking forward to the coming changes/improvements. And thanks once again for the hard work.

Have a good one.
