real whip lashes in mainstream movies
Re: real whip lashes in mainstream movies
I totally agree that in some cases especially in the 70s 80s.. maybe in the 90s too some whippings were more or less real. Never in case of the stars, only with paid exstras. Simply because finding a no-name nude extra was much cheaper than using special effects.
Especially your Schoolgirl Hitchhikers scene seems to be 100% real - at least visually. Unfortunately the scene is dubbed, very badly dubbed, which makes the otherwise real whipping seem to be fake...
The other thing is that real whipstrokes don't produce as dramatic effects as producers of these cheap sexploitation films thought. SO in many cases they painted in wide blood effects over the real strokes because they thought it looks more severe. This way they again just made the actualy strokes look fake....
These real lashes were still the minority...
In most cases however you see that the strokes are totally lame

That's it Pedro. I have used real bullwhips myself to whip masochistic people (women and men). There were no bleeding welts. At most, where the knot of the cracker hit, the skin burst open.
and bled.....
but you know that from the time when you used this bullehip-like whip at Mood.

One in a 1000's of method actors may want to be hit for real to help them act ( as L. Gemser comment above), but that is a rarity . Also, this would not "fly" today anywhere in the World ( as the whole world is a subject to SAG Rule 1 ). They key word here is a " mainstream" movies. Not a fetish porn.

You may be right bakerboy. Of course it's easier for an actress if she at least feels something and then has a nice reaction.bakerboy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 17, 2022 3:49 am One in a 1000's of method actors may want to be hit for real to help them act ( as L. In the recent movie productions there are not much whipping scenes.
Perhaps I know nearly all scenes from mainstream movies. In the old productions there value was placed on seeing how the whip hits or they filmed in such a way that you thought the whip hit.
That's why they had to act with the soft fake-whips. They really hit, but didn't hurt as well.

Dead But Dreaming is a mainstream movie.
It was shown on multiplexes to large audiences and it made an impact.
The extended whipping scene was real enough. People commented on how realistic is was and some pointed out that Amy had whip marks all over her body, real ones.
Considering that she was to received over 30 lashes and that there were many takes to accomplish this, She received over 100 lashes that were real enough and painful, very painful.

My understanding is that this flogging was a mixture of real beatings and fake marks.La Reine Margot wrote: ↑Mon Oct 17, 2022 8:00 am Dead But Dreaming is a mainstream movie.

However, the film is not perceived as a mainstream film by most who know it.
Unfortunately, I also have to say that I don't particularly like this flogging scene. It's not very well done.
Due to the long whip cords you can clearly see that they are not very hard. They also stick to the body. Were they soaked in paint or theatrical blood?

Die siegreichen 10 (do not know english titel)
Another example where a long, soft whip is used to whip a prisoner's chest, which is well protected by clothing and perhaps padding.
I don't think a glass wall was used for this scene. The whip is seen hitting her left side. On the right side the guy visibly misses his target.

Flash Gordon
The best example of real whipping with a very soft film whip.
They didn't even bother to fake a whip sound here.... but I like the scene.

Re: real whip lashes in mainstream movies
Though it is a self-whipping scene, the strokes seem to be quite authentical and real, and I guess are sort of painful, even if the huge knots probably make different pain than what a good whip should cause.
