Another example in which the scene was set very elaborately is Storm Warning 1951 with Ginger Rogers.

You can see how the long whip wraps nicely around her upper body and hits her chest.

The end of the whip emerges from under her left arm and then falls diagonally across her chest.
It has to be a relatively soft material, because you don't see that the fabric of the pullover is dented.

There's a reason she's wearing such a high-necked pullover. I think she has another piece of clothing underneath as a pad.
The whipping scene wouldn't have turned out so well otherwise.

But you are right, it is impossible to stage a crop, a branch or any other rigid instrument. In that case there must be clothing hiding a body protector, as is here:

Bakerboy, I think you got my intention.: With very, very few exceptions, there are certainly no real lashes in mainstream movies.

But the technique used to realize these scenes is different.

1. In most scenes, the whip does not touch the target.

2. Many, especially Arabic and Far Eastern films, show the beating of clothed people. There isl definitely a beating. Bur the cushions are underneath the clothing.
Incidentally, I also believe that Storm Warning was made that way. In addition, the whip is struck very slowly to take away the power by the wrapping.

3. If bare skin is visibly hit, a soft prepared whip is used.

4. Real blows are very rare. For example in "Mistress".
So I'm looking to find these szenes.

But because this topic is so versatile and because good and bad results come out of it, it is a topic for this forum.

In this really bad movie, the leader of the cult (Gemser) has a man and a woman whipped because they only want to have sex with each other. However, the rules of the sect require that everyone is allowed to have sex with others.

Later there is a scene in which the cult leader whips herself.

In both cases the whip hits the bare skin. Very soft cloth whips are probably used.

However, Anders, who directed this, has claimed that it was an actual whip that Gemser used for her self-flogging. Supposedly he had to slow her down... but I think shedid not hit herself hard.
