mise-en-scène

Image

Saturday morning, the morning before Xmass eve, Jac and Simonne ventured to the location to do some scouting. There was no one at the Eco Resort, Christmas time, so the duo sneaked in to take a look at what the big land looks like at this point in time.

Not a big change from what it was like in 2013, the last time our team was there, fortunately, all the interesting things that Jac remembered were in place, he wasn’t clear of the details in his memories so he was eager to see for himself if what he though could be used for the film was as he had it in his brain.

One of the places he was thinking of was an area way below the spot where some scenes in Dead But Dreaming were filmed, where there’s a construction that could be used as the spot where the Crucified Three will be scourged mercilessly.

From Jac’s perspective that day, he saw that the construction is very convenient for the purposes of the film. The stables like construction is bare and it could easily be transformed into anything the director’s imagination can muster, and right across it there’s a nice flat area that can be the setting for the crucifixion. It’s nice and flat, up to a point, and there are great views all around it.

Image

Another area he loved is one he thought of as a probable area to be used as the ‘temple/market’ place.

He was immensely happy to see that is was practically all set, it only needs some interesting decor with linen, leather and other appropriate textiles, as well as cardboard, plywood and other like materials to create walls, backgrounds, and so on; a tower in the background can be easily decorated to look like the temple area. There are some interesting walls that can be transformed.

Image

Jac and Simonne talked at length about the potential of the location. Jac was happy to tell her that he has all he needs for the film and that the trip itself was illuminating. It was long, very long. It takes over an hour to get there from where they met to take the bus, which is not downtown, but it is centric.

But the journey itself was not easy. They took a ‘minibus‘ most of the way, then they had to take another ‘minibus‘ to reach another area in the way, and finally they took a taxi that took them to the very spot, waited for them to take them back all the way to the far away station of the “Teleferico” for them to go to their respective homes. It was pretty complicated.

The question was how to get all the extras, bits and day players to be at the location in time? The solution was obvious, renting a bus and setting up three areas along the way to pick them up, the same bus would take them back to their chosen stops, everyday, after they were done with their scenes.

The transportation cost for the extras will go into the budget as soon as we get the costs of the bus rental per either trip, or day, or whatever is the best solution and price.

The principal cast and crew will lodge in the very nice, ecological, comfortable ‘cabañas‘ at the resort during the entire production. That will give the team the chance to work at a steady and fast pace, all day and night.

Image

Another important issue that was settled was that of the crosses. Although Jac didn’t decided the exact spot where to build them, he got an idea of the general area. He knows what he needs, and, interestingly enough, there’s a timber market on the route to the location that sells logs, of all sizes, and cuts them to order. That means that he can go there just before the production, buy the wood he needs, have them cut to his instructions and voila, ready.

So, the Location Scouting Mission was a huge success! Next step, locking dates and organizing the ‘building’ of the sets.

Image
wanttoknowmore: How are the orders for the costumes, crosses, and other props for the Seditiosa film progressing?
We have one person, our production manager, getting all the estimates from the people that will make the props, like the swords, lances, and others. She’s also going over the materials we have and we need for the costumes. The funds from the IndieGoGo campaign have not been disbursed yet, we expect them to be in our account next week, according to the information in their page. As soon as the money is in our hands, we’ll proceed to contract the people, give the advances and so forth.

The crosses is a different matter. They have to be partly built in the location. A week or so before the shooting of the movie starts, he’ll go to the timber place with a couple of people who will be in charge of building the set, he’ll buy the wood and have it transported to the location, which is 5 minutes away.

It will take a couple of days to set those crosses up, test them and so on. We’ll have video of the actual setting up and testing with the actresses. It will be fun. They will carry their logs, go up the crosses, test their capacity to withstand the stress, we’ll figure out the set up, sedile, no sedile, all that jazz. We’ll have a pretty good idea how it will all work.

By that time we’ll have the entire cast, costumes, props and so on and so forth. The date for the shooting will be set and we’ll begin the production of the film.

The first week of January we’re shooting a scene for 69 with crowds at a club. We’re using the occasion to cast all the extras we need in Seditiosa. We’ll have them all right there for two or three days.

The Year Of Our Ladies 2023

Image

It was a quiet time where Jac was, with family, unlike some of the others in the team that were at parties.

Friday night, the day before the year ended and lacking a crew, Jac and Simonne worked on a few scenes for 69 Année Érotique.

He didn’t have a crew because some of them had gone away for end of year parties or visits to relatives in far away places, the others were not needed and so, Simonne arrived that evening for the last shoot of the year.

The scenes were not complicated. Just inserts for longer scenes that will be shot in the next few days. So, Jac was back to his Two person Cast and Crew style of filmmaking, which is fine with him.

Image

Jac explained to Simonne that the original idea for the scenes they were going to work in had some changes.

The night before, Jac was thinking about the shots he wanted to work on and he was suddenly inspired by an image that came to his head. A picture of Dalí. Not a painting. But a picture of the surrealist painter sitting at a desk. But the desk is not a desk, it is a woman bent backwards in front of the well dressed Dalí. A phone rests on the woman’s arched chest and Dalí is writing over her belly. i

For the scene Jac was going to shoot, he decided to have Galatea (Simonne) naked, on all fours, while Hendrix (Jac) reads from his computer, which rests on Galatea’s naked back.

Image

That’s not all the fun Jac had the last week of the year. Two days before that great day, Jac and Dani were busy working on a couple of scenes where Lucy (Dani) after discussing Bretton, grabs Hendrix’ (Jac) head and kisses him with overwhelming passion.

The production of 69 is advancing at a good rate. The completed scenes are accumulating and that is pleasing to Jac who wants to have this film in the can as scheduled… by the end of this month.

The difficult part of this production is just coming up, with scenes that involve a good number of extras, complicated locations, an all female goth/metal band and lots of sexy s&m scenes… lots.

Image

Although a lot of our attention and time is into the production of the new film, we’re working very hard on the pre production of Seditiosa as well and I will have some interesting news about the female Christ film that a lot of people are anxious to see go into production. The story is looking more and more compelling all the time, and now that the location has been decided on, the images are building in Jac’s head and he will have a lot to say in the coming days.

However, sadly, we’re still waiting for IndieGoGo to release the funds we raised, so we can’t really do a lot without that money. We hope we’ll have it this week; although, that’s what we were thinking last week, and the previous one… all the way back to the 7th of December when the campaign ended. We began a nagging campaign to have them release those funds Pronto. We’re surprised, because the last time we raise money with them we got it in a week. C’est La Vie

Singing Before The Cross

Image

The production of 69 Année Érotique goes on at a very good pace, considering there were some changes in the schedule because of circumstances out of the producer’s hands.

There were two major issues with the production, not awful, mind you, but difficult for a team that until this production and since 2015 did not engage in Big Production Values films. And practically a whole new team, except for three, Gina, Ale and Mila who were there in all past big productions since Maleficarum

One issue was the shooting of many scenes that took place at the club, with the need of instruments for The All Girl Band, lots of extras, and, the most difficult part, the demand for lots of different lights set ups and all to be done by a tiny crew, Jac and his two or three assistants.

The club shooting went well during the three days that it was scheduled, even if there’s one shooting days still in the schedule this week.

Image

The All Girl Band is made of Simonne as the singer, Dani as the bass player, Mila as the violinist and two additional actresses, Sofi on the drums and Andrea as the lead guitar. Both Sofi and Andrea will be two of Yahel’s followers in Seditiosa.

Before the shooting at the club, a good number of scenes were shot at the primary set, that’s the house. Most to them with Simonne, who plays Galatea, a memory from 1969. She also plays Mina, the singer and another object of desire for Mr Hyde.

Image

Another good number of scenes were shot with Dani, who plays Lucy, the bass player in the band, who wants to act in one of Hendrix’ movies, and gets the role of Mona and her other self Nadja.

Mona is a daring woman who is willing to suffer and suffer some more for her art, while Nadja suffers with Mona without enjoying it until…

Mila, who plays the same role she had in Pygmalion, Vera, the violinist, is the head of The All Girl Band, and she’s also the secretary/assistant of Dr Jekyll and sometimes Hyde’s servant until…

Image

One of the many benefits that came from producing 69, so far, is that we needed extras, unpaid extras, lots of them, for the club scenes. A good number of people showed up and all of them are interested in taking a role in Seditiosa.

Although we will have an open casting call for the Female Christ movie soon, Jac thinks that there are many in the group that participated in the club scene that could be part of the crowd of extras, or bits and even supporting characters for the ambitious female crucifixion film.

Another benefit is that both, the cast and the crew are sharpening their skills immensely.

Three In A Row

Image

Three films are the center of our attention these days. The new production, 69 Année Érotique, the soon to be produced Seditiosa and the soon to have a theatrical release with a big premiere Pygmalion. One after the other and all three of them with their demands, needs, benefits, and NOW!

The date for the Pygmalion premiere has been set, Amy has confirmed her arrival, and the wheels are in motion for what will be an exciting time for all of us but specially for Jac and Amy who will be together in the same country for the first time in many, many years, since the end of 2015 to be exact.

Image

The new production, 69 Année Érotique, is nearing the end of production, with less than two weeks of work still ahead, but slowly wrapping up.

The making of this movie is definitely a great experience for all because this project is the first of many Big Production Values movies since 2015 and we’re hoping there are many more to come, without ignoring the much loved “two, three cast and crew films” Jac is fond of making.

Image

One of the great benefits of this big production is that we’re testing new people, like the camera assistant who also brings his own camera to the set for additional shots and he’s an eager learner. A film student who is near graduation and wants the hands on experience of a big film.

He’s not the only one passing the test, everyone in the set is, specially Jac who has a huge load of work to do because he is the Director of Photography, the Principal Gaffer, the Male Protagonist, the Producer and the Chief Consoler when his female leads run into emotional turmoil… ah, and he’s also the Sound Recordist… amongst many other menial tasks. However, he does have a lot of fun while doing all that.

Image
wanttoknowmore: So when are you going to start production/shooting of the Seditiosa film?
Seditiosa is not shelved somewhere, the team is very busy working on the pre production of the film right now. Mostly getting all those costumes, props, decorations and so on. We’re also casting for all the roles we need in the film. That’s another benefit of the new production. We have a good number of extras and bits in 69 from amongst whom we can choose some of the actors for Seditiosa.

Two of the potential actresses for big roles are part of the All Girls Band performing in 69. One in particular will most likely get the role of one of Yahel’s followers who at the end of the film has a critical action that not only is part of how the film ends in a dramatic way, but opens up the possibility of… yes… A SEQUEL!

The actress is Sofi, the drummer in the All Girls Band and ironically enough, she was going to be one Dr Jekyll’s patients in the original story that was shelved back in 2010. She was a child at the time, she’s now a beautiful young woman.

Image

We had a tentative date to begin the production of Seditiosa on February 12th. Unfortunately, that date had conflicts. We have carnival coming around that time and a lot of the people that would be working in the film have commitments for those dates. We’re going over the possible alternative dates and we’ll make a decision soon.

Jac was also planning to shoot Seditiosa in ten to 14 days straight; but after discussing possible schedules with some of the people who were being considered for important roles, he learned that many have jobs or university and they won’t be able to just take off for two weeks. They can do the work on weekends mostly and maybe take a day or two on a given week, and that’s fine too. So, instead of 14 days straight, we are scheduling to shoot in three weekends. Two of them of three days and the last one where most of the dramatic action takes place, of four days of intense work when The Crucified Three will be scourged, sentenced to the cross, made to walk to the Skull Hill, nailed to their crossbeams, raised to their crosses and left to agonize for a long, long time.

Image
Crux execution: oh cool, a film about women who play instruments, being killed
Being killed is a bit of a stretch, although three of the beautiful women that are part of the All Girls Band in 69 will suffer the agony of the cross in Seditiosa.

In 69 no one dies, but four beautiful ladies suffer the whip and other indignities at the hands of Mr Hyde who struggles to stay in the body he shares with Dr Jekyll, but both individuals and the four women are in the capable hands of a freaky director, Hendrix, who has a thing with Galatea, his love from 1969.

It’s a beautiful crazy sadistic love story. In one song Simonne sings, A mi me gusta el sexo sado (I like sado sex). Jac processed a clip of that song, titled Porno Lover, as well as the main song in the movie, the ’68 French hit La Maritza, as performed by Therion, and covered by the All Girls Band on the stage.

We’re going to have both clips at Patreon. One of them, La Maritza, as the heading for this post.

Via Dolorosa

Image

We are on the path to the crucifixion of the Crucified Three. It is a complicated road, a stressful road, a via dolorosa… Making a movie is complicated in itself, making a movie with little money is more complicated, making a movie with little money and set in an ancient historic period is beyond complicated, making a movie with little money, in a historic setting, where three women will be crucified in front of a crowd is total madness.

But here we are, working on the pre production of Seditiosa, a film about a Female Christ, with a budget of less than 20,000 dollars and with the need to have costumes, props, sets, and a huge number of actors to play soldiers, nazarenes, priests and a bunch of other people. Total Madness.

Mel Gibson needed 25,000,000 dollars to make The Passion of The Christ and make it look the way it does. Well… with 25 million we can probably make a thousand movies, each with a budget of 25,000, more than what we have to make this one.

But here we are, moving forward to make this movie with little money and a big heart… and we’re doing that while making ANOTHER movie with a budget of probably less than 2,500. So far the cash spent in 69 Année Érotique is 2,073… right, that’s it, and it covers all the shooting until now. While the cash spent for Seditiosa as of now is 1,550 and that’s to cover some of the deposit money for the orders we made for props and costumes.

Total Madness!

Image
daelan: Hey Margot,

Do you know anything about the loincloths in Seditiosa? I loved the one used by Yahel in the reaharsal — it gives the idea of some dignity for her.
The question came up in an exchange with our principal supporters, there are two of them, and we have frequent exchanges of ideas, suggestions, etc. They are the initiators of this project, thus they get updates all the time. The issues of the loincloths came up more than once.

In once such exchange I mentioned the film Perils of Jane, where Amy wears something like a loincloth before the end of the third part, after an intense flogging and after she’s crowned with thorns, very much how it will be in Seditiosa.

In Perils Amy is also dragged through the mud, the shooting was during rainy days, so she’s muddy all the time. At one point Jac positioned her on top of a rocky well, standing on the edge as if she was being presented to a crowd, like Yahel will be at one point. I shared a picture of that moment.

Image

Amy was wearing a pink top that was whipped off her back and chest. The remains of that top got muddy and at the end it looked like a loincloth, but it’s only hanging in front of her, the back is gone. However, Jac likes the effect of it, the looks of it, so that’s one way of showing the loincloth under consideration.

Another way would be similar to what Simonne was wearing during the rehearsals for Monxa Mala, but smaller and it will be bloodied and dirty by the time she walks carrying her patibulum to calvary.

Image

And of course there is the one Simonne wore during the Dialogue Rehearsal, which is a nice piece of cloth, which I think she wore in the film Monxa Mala.

In the video we made for the IndieGoGo campaign she wore it almost as an underwear.

Image

Mila has the same cloth for her bit in the Dialogue Reheasal video but it looks different because Mila wore it in a different way.

She just wrapped it around her hips and tied the ends. The result is very alluring, sexy, while preserving her dignity, as it were.

Image

There are those and many possibilities, but at the end it will be what they, the director and the actress, come up with. I’m totally sure it will be great.
wanttoknowmore: Can you please say when the Seditiosa filming will begin?

Most of the preliminary stuff (set construction, props, and costumes) should have at least been ordered if not delivered by now. Would like to know a few mor details as to where we are.

Thanks.
The pre-production is advancing at a normal pace. We’re getting everything we need and as far as I know there aren’t any problems in that area, everything is progressing as expected.

The set construction cannot be done until we’re at least two or three days from production. We cannot build the set too far in advance because we don’t own the property where we are going to be setting things up. Another and very important reason is that the sets are not going to be the kind that can stay put forever. They’ll be gone as soon as we’re done using them.

The props, particularly the swords and spears, take time, they are being made and we have to wait. They are not going to be metal, or plastic, the materials the crafts people are using to make them look the way they should need time to be set properly , the swords have to be painted a few times to give them the metal look they have to have.

We have the helmets and other attire, but they have to be fitted to the persons. Which means, once we close the deals with people who are going to be soldiers, executioners, sales people and so on, we fit them in their costumes. That will happen a few days before we start shooting too.

But we are also organizing the crew that is going to be working behind the camera, not only the technical crew, like the DP and Sound, but, most importantly, the people who are going to be building the sets, the crosses and particularly, the “market place“, that requieres a lot of work and materials.

This is a big production but with an extremely low budget and there are lots of details to take care of and that’s what we are working on now.

The weekend after carnival Jac and some of his team will be at the location, discussing details with the administrators and checking the areas where the set will be built. We have one area partly set, as I shared before, where the ‘market place‘ will be located. It is partly built. We need to cover part of it and it will look huge. We then have to fill it up with people and animals, mostly donkeys, sheep and a few dogs. … Lots of linen, herbs, gourds, things like that, including a couple of partly naked slaves for sale.

Dancing The Time Away

Image

A lot has been happening even if Carnival was a terrible time for anything. Dani went to another city to act in an Add and couldn’t get tickets for the bus ride back, so she stayed a day longer, which meant that she couldn’t be in town for the scenes she was going to be in for 69 Année Érotique. And that was not the only problem during that fateful period of time.

Jac decided that it was awful timing for any production work, so he cancelled all shooting for the week, although he did shoot a couple of scenes where he only needed himself for a couple of monologues, one as Dr Jekyll and the other as Mr Hyde. So, for one night he was the Producer, Director, Dr Jekyll, Me Hyde, DP, Sound Person, Gaffer, Make-Up Artist, Wardrobe Person, Clapper, Curious Bystander, and anything else needed. I have to mention that he did have a Stand In to check the light, focus and so on, a nice Bottle of Vital Water, empty of course, taped to a tall candle holder, which was a prop in many movies.

Image
Jac doing his Dr Jekyll monologue in front of a mirror commenting on his birthday.

He also got busy preparing the materials for the impending theatrical release of Pygmalion. He took the trailer to the multiplex for testing, the image was not coming out the way it should, and after some fixing and more testing, it was the opinion of the techs at the cineplex that it was better for Jac to make a cinemascope version of the trailer and maybe even the entire film.

So, Jac was back to work to come up with the scope version. The multiplex people also suggested to subtitle all the Spanish dialogues to English. That would attract more people to the film, they said. And it’s true. Most films made in Bolivia are shown in their original language, Spanish, without subtitles for English speakers.

So Jac did that too and the result is here:

https://vimeo.com/802254327

He was also organizing the visit to the location for Seditiosa to close deals, set dates, and begin the work and so on.

Again, Carnival got in the way and other activities that the people at the location have these days and finally the agreement was made for Sunday of next week to begin the work there. I will have pictures. There will be a few visits to the location prior to the production to build the sets, test the props and so on.

We’re getting closer and closer to the production of the Female Christ film indeed.

Image

The one person having fun during carnival was Simonne. She was part of one of a most famous dance group in the country, a dance known as Caporales, and the group itself is known as Caporales de San Simon… hmmm. Right. Simonne dancing with the San Simon comparsa (troupe).

In any case, there she was, dancing her heart away in Oruro last Saturday and Sunday, and this Sunday in Cochabamba. I must say that the dance itself is not a short event. No. The dancers start on their way through the streets of Oruro at 6 am, ending their participation sometime in the evening. All that time dancing and dancing and dancing.

Image

A big change in Simonne’s performance work, of course, but equally harsh, or perhaps more. Just imagine dancing up and down Broadway in NYC beginning early morning until the night, non stop, perhaps a bathroom break if at all, and having drinks and maybe a bit of food while you dance and dance, and then, go to sleep a little to start all over again the next day. Ah, and did I mentioned that at the end of the dancing route you get to the Church, once there you get on your knees and drag yourself with the little energy you have left, all the way to the altar! On Your Knees!

Just days before carnival Simonne was going through a lot of suffering for 69, in the role of Mina, the singer in the band, who falls in the hands of Mr Hyde and …

Image

The Carnival inconvenience will be over today, Sunday. The shooting of 69 will resume tomorrow, Monday. The work for the premiere of Pygmalion will intensify, with press releases, visits to TV and Radio stations, preparing the banners and the Grand Premiere for the 22nd of March, with the presence of Amy herself who will be arriving in La Paz the 17th.

It will be the first time in many years for Amy and Jac to be together in the same place and presenting a movie together. There are lots of speculations as to what might happen then.

Image

Between now and the middle of March, the pre production of Seditiosa will be completed. We will be trying on the costumes, testing the props, building the crosses and the ancient market place and all that stuff.

The dates for the shooting of the film will be set and all those extras, bits, day players, actors and crew will be committed to the work.

Sometime in the next few days, Simonne will be trying out the most difficult scene in the film for her, The Scourging. It is her most difficult scene because of what Jac has in mind for that courageous and daring lady. Lots of gymnastics involved, which will be strenuous for her. During that test, the Make Up Lady will be showing her skills with the wounds caused by the terrible scourging Simonne will be suffering even before the film is made.

And, over all, everything we need for the film will be in place, ready to commence.

Image
Iconoclast12: I thought this loincloth turned out really well. The blood and grime, as you noted, would be a cherry on top.

Leave it to an old pro to maximize the sexiness. What I much prefer about Mila’s dialogue loincloth and Simonne’s Monxa Mala loincloth compared to Simonne’s dialogue loincloth/underwear is that they truly seem like they have been “wrapped” around the hips in a way that shows their womanly shape.

But the wonderful thing is that there are three different girls decorating the crosses, which leaves many different ways to decorate those girls!
I would like to clarify, that as far as the garments our Crucified Three will wear, it is not something that has been decided yet. There are some ideas under consideration, based on what people wore in those times. We are aware that under-garments were not that common for women, although some women wore cloths as a bra nicely wrapped around their breasts, maybe to keep them in place. The same goes for a sort of loincloth, that was also wrapped, or tied around the hips. Those undergarents were not always white, the colors more often used were a brick red color.

A common use of the tunic women wore was to wrap the lower end under the crotch, maybe not always. Some women wore some kind of gym panties during the practice of sports; those who actually practiced some kind of sport, upper classes I guess, of the Roman persuasion. It is possible that the wearing of loincloths of all kinds was common in some places.

For the purpose of dramatic effect, in Seditiosa, our Crucified Three will wear some kind of loincloth based on their personal preference.

The Crucified Three will be trying their costumes, including the loin clothes, pretty soon and I will have pictures and maybe videos.

I’ll have more news soon.

Pygmalion: Tales Of A Premiere

Image

The past days have gone full Pygmalion mode.

Amy arrived in La Paz on the 16th of March and just before her arrival and until the moment she left for the US on the 24th of the same month, all hands were on the theatrical release of Pygmalion, Amy’s 5th film as director.

Those incredibly short days were of high intensity, from the moment when Jac went up to the airport to pick up his partner, collaborator of so many years, to the moment when they said good bye with tears in their eyes.

The flight was On Time at 8 45 am … according to the Arrivals Board, but it was almost 9 am. Jac had been waiting for 20 minutes already, he arrived to the airport a bit early, he had a Capuccino with Croissant not long before. After what he considered a good breakfast, he waited, and waited until a message appeared in his phone, it was from Amy: After missing the first approach due to dogs on the runway, we finally landed here in La Paz.

Jac was very happy. Not too long after the message Amy was walking past the gates to an anxiously waiting Jac. Aaron, is behind Amy, not seen in the picture, only his big suitcase.

Image

Soon after Amy arrived to La Paz she was going from press conference to press interviews, to television, to radio, promoting the theatrical release of her film.

She was back in the city where she lived 10 years, made film after film, as a sound recordist at first, an actress later with around 20 films, a producer, a Heskinator, a title given to her because of her abilities in building props, like a rack, making costumes, building crosses and because she’s very handy with all kinds of tools, she was soon a director and script writer, authoring five films… perhaps the most active and productive time for what became to be known as the Dynamic Duo of Amy and Jac.

Image

During all the time Amy was in La Paz there was a mixture of excitement, anxiety, emotional turmoil and everything in between and beyond. It was many years since Amy and Jac shared the same city, the same house, the same room… It was also a time of a great reunion with the cast and crew of Pygmalion, after almost 8 years. Most of the team that made Amy’s film what it is, a great meta modern film, was at the premiere with family and friends. Unfortunately some were missing.

The great moment arrived, the Grand Premiere of Pygmalion at the Cinemateca, with a great number of guests. After the film was shown the cast and crew went up on stage and they all applauded Amy for her great film. People loved it!

Image

What impressed the most during the first public screening of the film in the world, was Mila’s acting. Perhaps because so much time passed since the time Pygmalion was produced and edited, everyone had a fresh look at the film, even Amy, who commented to Jac Mila carries the film, she’s so good. Beto said It’s a great film and Mila is fantastic!

All the comments in the after party were in the same tone. Everyone loved the film and they were all impressed with the acting, specially Mila's.

Image

The elusive theatrical release of Pygmalion was finally here. The first attempt to release it was way back in 2020, everything was all set. A press tour, sponsors, a date for Amy to travel to Bolivia. The release was scheduled for March 26 of that year. It was then that the first case of Covid 19 appeared in the US, and very near where Amy was living at that time. Suddenly, the US was in turmoil, people were told to stay home, no traveling at all. Amy was sorry she wasn’t going to make it to the release of her film.

Jac wanted to postpone it but some people in the team disagreed. Everything was in place and it would look bad on them if the release was cancelled, so the plans to release the film went on but the universe had other plans. Two weeks before the release date, Covid landed in the Andes and all movie houses closed.

Three years later Pygmalion is FINALLY in movie theaters, sharing the limelight with big Hollywood movies like Shazam and John Wick, whatever that is.

Image

Everything went extremely fast during the short time Amy spent in La Paz. One day Amy and Jac were having pizza and beer, the next day Amy was flying back to the US, feeling sick, because all that excitement, tension, turmoil, lowered her defenses, not to mention the altitude and lack of oxygen.

But she was happy and planning to return but for longer time, maybe not ten years, but at least a month.

She took with her the great memories of having another film in the big screen, seeing the friends she has in La Paz adoring her, sharing those intense days with Jac.

For a moment there, it was as if she had never left, for both of them. They were talking, planning, laughing, disagreeing… as if those 8 years hadn’t transpired. But it happened and the extremely brief moment they had in the middle of March, 2023, was suddenly over.

They are both back in their world, with their work, their loved ones, the happy and sad moments they experience far away from each other.

Image

They are back on their separate paths now, Amy preparing to go back to the university where she runs the film program and is a professor with tenure, and back to the preparations of a new film. Jac is back in the set of 69 Anneé Érotique as well as jumping in the quickly approaching production of Seditiosa.

Pygmalion is in theaters and it will be there for a short time, I expect, films don’t last a long time in multiplexes; however, Amy’s film will soon be released to the world in our many platforms, including our stores, Amazon, Vimeo and others. I’ll be announcing that gigantic universal event soon.

So Many Films So Little Time

Image

Before our Pygmalion frenzy I was preparing a post with the title above. At least, I was thinking of a post with some of the information I was sharing with our principal backers for the film Seditiosa and with the intension of answering to some questions about many things.

I was also going to share a sad story that I saw in the news… well, everyone in the world saw it. The passing of Raquel Welch at 82. So, I begin with that. As everyone knows Raquel Welch was the sex symbol of the sixties, with a number of films, the best known of a long list are Fantastic Voyage y One Million Years B.C.

One film that is particularly linked to Jac is Bluebeard, where she plays one of the wives of the psycho killer played by Richard Burton. The link to Jac is in a review of Amy’s Barbazul, where Jac plays the famed killer. In it, the reviewer says that he can finally eliminate Richard Burton from his head as the image of Bluebeard and replace it with Jac Avila. Cool.

There’s more to the links between Raquel and Jac. One little known fact is that she was Bolivian by father.

But not only that, her Bolivian family were known to Jac’s family in La Paz. Her name was Raquel Tejada, she was related to Lydia Gueiler Tejada who became president of Bolivia. The Tejada family was part of a very tight group of families in La Paz including Jac’s family. The Welch last name comes from her first marriage.

Lastly, one amazing image is the famous picture of Raquel Welch on a cross.

Image

And now to some questions before I embark in what is coming.

Guard: Just a question, I saw the trailer for execution of the unrepentant. There’s a part where camille is freshly crucified and an impalement pole is quite vicerly screwed in between her legs, it’s looks like her vagina is actually being penetrated . My question is was this some kind of visual camera trickery or did Ms Duka , actually ahem…
…take one for the team?
The Execution of the Unrepentant is a very vicious film where Camille is, indeed, impaled, after she’s nailed to the crossbar, raised up and left there, dangling, supported by her nailed hands. She is swaying high up there for a while, as a lesson to Gabriele who does not learn and refuses to confess and as a punishment is, herself, crucified; but in Gabrielle’s case she’s raised up the pole and her feet are nailed as well. Not so for Camille, who, after Gabrielle is crucified, suffers the impalement.

Image

Was it real, was she a trooper and let Jac pierce her body with a stick? In the film the impalement device goes into her, she’s raised all the way up with it and then, slowly, she slides down the pole as it penetrates her entire body, slowly. At the end we see the sharp point of the pole emerge through her mouth.

Well… she lived to make many more movies after that. Right?

Another question
portis: Glancing through VermeerWorks today and saw advertised a movie from 2011 with Amy in the cast.. ‘The Spectres of Blood Castle’ .. Couldnt get anymore info.
Anybody fill in the gaps??
Back in 2008, when Vero arrived to shoot Amy’s first film as director Sirwiñakuy, Jac asked Vero to try a wedding dress that Amy bought at the open air market where they normally bought stuff for movies. Vero tried it on and Jac was in wonder. Vero looked very pale, her dark hair framing her face, the weeding dress had a high neck. She looked stunning. Jac said “You look like a ghost” followed by “we should make a movie about a ghost after we shoot this movie! (Sirwiñakuy)

Soon after that comment Amy and Jac visited the offices of a castle in the rain forrest, proposed to them to shoot a movie there, they agreed and voila, soon after Sirwiñakuy was produced, the three of them went to the castle for three days and shot the ghost movie.

Sirwiñakuy was released in 2010, after the release of films like Agent X, Fantom, Via Crucis of Jane 1 and 2, Aristocrux, Romana Crucifixa Est… and so on. All of them were in the post production line in 2008, like a new bunch of films is now.

Jac had an assembled cut of 3 hrs of Specters when at the end of 2010 the dynamic duo engaged in the production of Maleficarum, Barbazul, Le Marquis de la Croix, all of those were released beginning in 2011. Specters was shelved. Unfortunately. The plan is to release it at the end of this year, after Seditiosa, 69, CruXtreme V, Crux Simplex, Agent Honey Trap, and Deep Cover Mole.

Image
wanttoknowmore: So, we are still working on the 69 film, and have yet to start production/fliming of the Seditiosa film.
When is the Seditiosa flim actually going to start filming? Will it still be finished by the end of April as previously promised?
johnjha: Yes I thought it was mid March. Been a long time since any news regarding the film.
I will soon expand on the progress of the Female Christ movie that the world can’t wait to see, maybe the universe as a whole.

What I can say now is that Seditiosa is already in the production face. The team is working on all those details that need to be in place before the shooting starts. It is not pre production, it is the organizing of the production itself.

Most of the organizing is taking place as I type this. Jac is at the Cinemateca arranging for the meeting of the entire cast and crew. Other members of the crew are working on getting many of the details ready, like the transportation.

The person in charge of the art direction is working on getting what he needs to go to the location and build the sets, crosses and so on. I’m giving a very broad description of what is happening because I cannot describe all that is happening because it is an organic thing that moves on minute by minute.

A lot will be happening this week related to the props, costumes, EFX. The team is learning now that they will have to find good looking skulls! For Calvary!! Which have to be in place on the first day of shooting!

The person in charge of making the swords and spears came through very nicely. Jac is happy with his work. That person, who has a long history of working in films and theater as Art Director, told Jac that he has been hoping to work with him since 1992! Imagine that!

Image

The Seditiosa project is at the final stages of organization right now, Jac is going through the script.

After going over the location and setting up the structure of the story on the physicality of the place, he is now going over the elements of each sequence, particularly the dialogues. They are pretty much based on what is already written, with some additional discussions, particularly at the beginning, a lot of debate and conflictive arguments with the people in power, to mention part of it.

The one element that he will be testing with Simonne is the scourging, as I said before. It will be a two day work, where all Jac wants to put in the scene will be tried and the Make-Up person will be working on the wounds produced by the lashes. It’s very important for that to be realistic and impressive, as never done before in our work.

Although the crucifixions will be more impressive, Jac knows what the potential is and we will do some testing, but it’s not as complicated as Simonne’s scourging for many physical reasons that Jac has to test with the leading lady, to see if she can handle it, before settling into it.

As it happened with our past productions, one day we will be talking about it, discussing it, planning it and all of a sudden, the very next day, we will be totally engulfed in the production. That will be happening pretty soon.
