Hail Yahel, Your Queen!

Image

The three Seditious women received less than the 39 lashes Casper ordered because the man with the know how Lictor knew better, he wants the punished to survive their ordeals for what comes next. Judith and Magdalena received 30 lashes, maybe a couple more because at times the men with the whip did not wait for the count before lashing, but Yahel was hit more than 40 times, because for each lash the others received, she got two, Lictor stopped flogging her sometime after the 18th lash was counted, his assistant continued a bit more.

After the gruesomely painful lashing, the three chastised women are lowered from their bonds to lay on the dirty ground, but almost immediately Yahel is raised up to her weaken feet to face the people gathered below the bloodied stage.

Casper orders for a crown to be brought in, a crown of thorns, of course. Behold your queen! Casper mocks Yahel, a queen deserves a crown!

The soldier brings the crown and Casper proceeds to place it on Yahel’s head, the crowd below break into an applause.

Image

Judith and Magdalena are forced to get on their knees and Casper orders: Worship your queen!

The governor and his companions walk on the stage of the theater of cruelty, they cannot hide their surprise at the sight before them. One asks: Did you order this? The Governor responds Casper has the authority to do this on his own, I’m here to sentence them.

Image

The Flogging Sequence took one full day. It was the first day of July when it happened. The Crucified Three stayed at the location for the night all expenses paid, which included dinner, a bottle of Singani, to warm up, and breakfast. There was a lot of make up work to do on them for the sequences to come the very next day.

The three protagonists plus the make up woman had a pleasant night and got up early next morning to get ready for the very important sequences: the Crowning, the Sentencing and the beginning of their long Via Crucis to their execution.

The three sequences planned for that Sunday took a very intense day of production work, with a large number of actors witnessing and participating on the events of those two days.

Image

After the intense day of work on that July 2, the work was not done as Jac had hoped, of course. The team returned to the set on the 9th day of July to complete the Via Crucis and begin the Crucifixion of the three, which was not completed that day either, they had to return a while later to finish the film and on July 29th the film was finally in the can, as they say. However, Jac did not call It’s a wrap! that day. He might declared the production done this weekend, after he is done with the assembling of the entire film.

But that long wait from July 9 to July 29 and thereafter, was a tremendously busy time for Jac who is assembling the film. This past week ended with Jac working on the Flogging Sequence and this week has seen The Crowning and the Sentencing Sequences assembled.

Image

Jac had previously put together the Via Crucis Sequence and he was more than half done with it sometime before last week when the master editor returned to the Flogging. It happens like that.

Maybe he was saturated with the images of the Via Crucis so he went back to complete the Flogging, which he didn’t, but he’s almost there, he still has to work out some details; but he moved on to the Crowning, a simpler scene, in his view, with not a lot happening, if you compare it with the intricate flogging sequence, but what happens during the crowning is very dramatic and needed careful work with the shots.

Image

After Yahel is ceremoniously and mercilessly Crowned, the other two women are pushed to their knees and ordered to ‘worship your queen‘. That’s when the Governor walks on the stage to pass sentence on the women.

The Sentencing Sequence is not a complicated sequence either, but it requieres the same care as the crowning.

Having completed the cutting of the crowning and the sentencing scenes, Jac has returned to the Via Crucis to complete it and he will jump, right after, into the Crucifixion Sequence, which will demand a lot from the overworked editor/director.

If all goes well, the entire Seditiosa movie will be ready for a fine and hopefully final cut by the end of this week. The final cut, color correction and image work, as well as the sound mix, should take an entire week, if not more.

Image

Seditiosa is in the last stretch of the post production and as the work continues, we will be setting up the pre release option for our supporters which will last a very short time.

At this point in the post production, nothing can be added to the story. What is done, is done. The work will be completed with the material that was produced, nothing less, nothing more. The result will be the final film and it will be what it will be.

I will need to address some issues bought up in many comments at some point, maybe. With high expectations come disappointments. It always happens. It happens to me when I’m expecting a movie based on a novel I love, for that movie to reflect, exactly, what my imagination created in my head from the words I read, but unfortunately it never, ever happens. Big disappointment, even if I eventually enjoy the film based on that lovely novel, but that’s a different issue.

Image

After the sentencing, all three protagonists, one at a time, are dragged down from the stage to pick up their heavy logs to begin their march to their cruel execution. That’s a matter for the next update. Meanwhile, we have used up our resources and we need to replenish them.

Via Crucis of the Crucifixa – Part One

Image

The weekend of July 2 was incredibly intense. In those two days the cast and crew worked on the flogging, the sentencing, the forcing to carry the crossbeams and the long, very long walk to the Hill of the Skulls.

Jac’s intention was to finish the entire Crucifixion Sequence during that weekend, but the sequences at work were too involved, incredibly performed by all, specially Simonne who surprised Jac with one unscripted moment.

The take begins with the two torturers carrying a weakened, tortured, Yahel away from the stage of cruelty and down a small hill to where she has to pick up her heavy log.

Image

Before the scene began, Simonne had a conversation with to the two actors playing her tortures, far from the director, where she suggested they drop her at one point during their walk down the path. They agreed and the two guys began carrying Yahel when half way down they just dropped her like a sack of potatoes. The young suffering woman rolled down the dirt and rocky path, loosing her crown in the process, in what is turning out to be an incredible moment in the film.

Image

Jac was behind the main camera, shooting the scene, when the unexpected, unscripted, moment happened. He froze in amazement seeing Yahel dropped by her tortures and rolling down, her crown falling off her head.

Jac followed Yahel with the camera as the tortured woman rolled down the hill and as he followed her, he could not avoid getting the other camera nearby into his frame. He quickly repositioned his lens to let the scene go to its conclusion.

Yahel was forced up to her feet, her crown was placed on her head again while she struggle a little but could not stand on her feet, so she went down on her knees. The tortures placed the log on her pained shoulders, forced her to get up on her feet and pushed her on her way.

Image

When the scene was completed, Jac asked the cast to do it again, all of it. The cast repeated the same action a few more times with Yahel falling and rolling, falling and rolling… That night Jac went over the shots, silently screaming Fuck, this is awesome!.

That very first take, in all its glory, is posted at Patreon, it’s fun to watch.

https://www.patreon.com/rfpix?fan_landing=true

Image

The other two condemned women, Judith and Magdalena had gone down the same path. First it was Magdalena, shortly after hearing her sentence to the cross. She was dragged down by a soldier who had no qualms in mistreating her. At the bottom of the hill, Magdalena saw the huge logs and was commanded to pick one up, she struggle at first but she managed to put it over her shoulders, got up and began her walk.

At the bottom of the hill, Magdalena saw the huge logs and was commanded to pick one up, she struggle at first but she managed to put it over her shoulders, got up and began her walk.

Image

The next to be dragged down the hill by another soldier was Judith, in both cases the crowds were screaming at them, insulting them, demanding for their crucifixion. Once Judith had the heavy log over her shoulders, she screamed in pain as she got up on her feet to begin her long and winding walk to the crucifixion stage.

Image

After The Crucified Three had done numerous takes of them struggling and picking up the logs and pushed on their way, Jac and the crew’s attention turn to the long Via Crucis Sequence, which was ALMOST completed that weekend. I will discuss the details of that sequence next time. There was no more time left that day to begin the Crucifixion Sequence and after a long discussion between the director and the protagonists, it was decided to return to the set the next weekend, the 9th of July, to work on the final scene, The Crucifixion. In Jac’s mind there was the need to work a little on the Via Crucis as well.

Jac called the day and the exhausted main cast and the exuberant extras and crew were happy that it was over, for that day. Before going walking back all the way to the resort to change their clothing, have their well earned meal, and rest a bit, the cast and crew had their picture taken.

Image

The post production of Seditiosa is going as it should, with good days, not so good days, horrible days, for all kinds of reasons. It is a stressful job. Putting all those shots together, choosing the take that works best and then looking for the one that should come right after, to create that Third Something, that gives meaning to the action, is truly a pain in the ass. It is the art of the editor. That’s where the film is at this point.

Most of the film is already past the first cut, in some cases the sound tracks have been built, music included. The work in the next couple of days is concentrated on the Crucifixion Sequence, but I will go into detail later, after I discuss the Via Crucis Sequence.

In the meantime we’re considering the pre sale of the film at a high price. Why? Because it is special. All our initial contributors will be the first to get to see the film, it will be like a pre opening of the film. The contributions range from 50 to 2,500 dollars and in some cases even more.

A meeting of the minds today, celebrating Dani’s 36 birthday, briefly discussed that issue today and that’s when the examples came as to why we should have a presale of the film at a high price.

That discussion will expand when the heads talk it out tonight and we should have a decision right after.

In other words, the pre sale will actually be a campaign for additional contributions to the film.

The Via Crucis of the Crucifixas – Part Two

Image

That second day of July was dedicated to the sentencing and the long Via Crucis for the condenmed.

Not long before this moment, Yahel and her companions had taken a long journey from the Hill of the Skulls, all the way to the market. They are beginning the journey back, but this time they have the bloody marks of the whip on their backs, the heavy logs on their shoulders, their feet unprotected and not to mention, they are exposed to all, almost naked.

One recent comment suggested that Judith, the rebel who incited the others to confront the Romans, should walk totally naked, as an example. There was such discussion during the early exchanges for the script but it was discarded. If the loin cloths are going to be taken off, it should happen when they are up on their crosses.

The walk began at the foot of the Stage of Cruelty where, after the sentencing. All three protagonists, one at a time, are dragged down from the stage to pick up their heavy logs to begin their march to their cruel execution.

Image

It is a long, very long walk, over harsh terrain, going down hill at first, for most of the walk, and going up again to reach the Hill of Skulls. The entire cast and crew were there to accompany the condemned on their walk to their cruel execution.

As the procession passed by the market, where the three were arrested, the crowd following them were teasing, screaming, calling for them to move faster. Not everyone, of course. There were those who were crying.

Image

After the market, The Three To Be Crucified walked by the hill where Yahel cured the man who was believed to be possessed by demons and by the tree where she was healing Deborah’s wounds after saving her from being stoned to death.

In that spot Yahel stumbled and was about to fall, she was helped to get back on her feet by her torturers using the whip as encouragement; the whipped woman got up only to go down on her knees again and be force back on her feet with more lashes.

There is a nice clip of this moment at Patreon

https://www.patreon.com/rfpix

Magdalena was at the head of the procession, a soldier pushing her to move on, behind her was Judith and her soldier who was just as nasty, and a bit farther way was Yahel, with the two tortures using their whips to make her move.

Image

The walk became longer for the cast because after they covered the length of each segment of the long journey, they had to stop, return to a selected point to do it all over again, for the cameras to get different angles and takes of the same situation, including the times Yahel had to fall to be whipped into getting up.

The afternoon was advancing faster than the procession, the changes in the light were giving the image an interesting look but those changes were a source of worries for the director.

After the procession passed the ‘tree’ area, they had to walk down a very narrow path and uneven terrain that made the via crucis of the three much more difficult, and painful.

Image

At the edge of that part of the walk there’s a very steep path down to the area where the three women rescued Deborah from a certain death by stoning.

Ligia, who plays Deborah, is going to be the lead in a new film where a slave suffers a three part sentence to the cross for three different crimes, stealing, running away and murdering a centurion. But that’s a discussion for the future.

As the light of the sun began to hide behind the mountains surrounding the location, the long march to the crucifixion began the journey down the steep rocky path.

Image
A screen shot during the editing, testing a color correction

During Yahel’s painful and exhausting trudge her tormentors seemed to relish whipping her to keep her on a steady step.

Beto, who plays the Governor, commented at one point that the entire shooting where he participated was simply amazing, including the long walk. He was with Fermin, who plays his sidekick and Monica, who plays his wife, far behind the crowd and they had a mesmerizing view of the entire scene, the walk, the crew working on the shooting of the takes, all the work happening in front of him.

For a shoe string budget, if that we can call it that, the production was truly amazing.

Image

As the march of pain was passing by the stoning area, it was becoming clear to Jac that the Crucifixion Sequence was not going to take place that day. He didn’t say anything to anyone because he was too busy with the camera and directing the action.

The director/cinematographer was at the edge of the Hill of skulls area capturing the cortege going up the hill, towards him. He was seeing the fast expanding shadows covering up the entire area as the sun was beginning to hide from view behind the mountains, in high contrast with the beginning of the story, when Yahel and her companions walked down that same hill on their way to the market under a bright mid morning sun.

The Crucified Three had walked down that hill, having a conversation, not imagining that they would be involved in a series of events that would take them back to this point, walking up the same hill, but this time naked, beaten, on their way to their crucifixion.

Image

When the crucifixion parade finally reached the top of the hill Jac called it a day, not before shootting some dialogue takes with Erix, who plays the high priest, because the actor was leaving for NY and there was a chance that he was not going to be around to shoot the crucifixion scene the next time around, whenever that would happen.

The whole cast and crew were told that the production wasn’t over and that they would be notified when the next shooting day would be.

Soon after the cast and crew were all enjoying their well earned meal after which the were ready to leave the location until the next time.

The day was over but the production was not. The hardest part was still in the future. A sense of uncertainty came upon Jac as he sat in the van transporting him back home.

It doesn’t matter how much experience one has, how many times one makes a movie, a crucifixion movie in particular, every production has its own problems to be resolved, its own conflicts, its own terrors, and Seditiosa was not different.

Image

The production was nearing to wrapping it up. One more day and that would be it, or so Jac thought.

I will go into the details of the production of the Crucifixion Sequence next; and maybe deal with some of the comments that came my way.

We started a Pre Sale campaign for those interested in watching the film long before its official release in November.

Our backers and supporters will have the film beginning the end of August. We’ll be announcing the details in the coming days.

Three To Be Crucified

Image

The date and time for the last sequence in Seditiosa was set for Sunday, July 9th, in the year of our lady 2023. The main cast and crew were picked up at 8 in the morning, some like Simonne, from their homes, and the large cast of over 30 gathered at one agreed upon location at 11 am where a large bus was waiting for them. The difference in time was simple, the principal cast, Dani and Mila required a couple of hours for all that make up and there was no point of having the large cast sitting there waiting.

It was expected to be a very exciting day and scary at the same time. Exciting for the big cast that, so far, had participated in most of the dramatic sequences leading to this moment. They were going to be participants and spectators of a very strange and intense passion play.

It was scary for the crew who had the responsibility to bring it all to come to pass, but most importantly it was pretty spine-chilling for the protagonists that were going to suffer the real pains of crucifixion without anything on to protect them from the windy cold of winter.

Image

Jac wanted to be done with the production that day and he was more or less confident about it. As a matter of fact he already ordered the rum, and other drinks for the wrap-up party which was planned to take place at the location at the end of the shoot that day. He could not predict what was going to happen, no one could.

The entire cast, including Erix, who did not yet go away, and the crew assembled at the location that morning, a sunny, cold and cloudless morning, and got ready for the big show.

Jac needed a few more takes of the long walk, and since they all had to go down the long path again, he took that opportunity to get some shots of the three protagonists and their soldiers on their Via Crucis down and up to the Hill of Skulls.

Image

The work was intense, there was an incredible tension in the air. The shooting started with the procession arriving to the area, where each of the women were pushed to the posts where they were going to be crucified.

One condemned at a time was pushed down to their patibulums to be nailed to the wood to then be raised up to their posts. The three suffered the agonies of the cross, under the bright sun, embraced by a cold wind coming down from the snowy mountains. The spectators watching in awe at the three women suffering the indignities of their crucifixion. Joanna and Deborah approached them at one point, there were some exchanges between Yahel and Joanna with a surprising touch that I will not reveal.

Jac made sure to have a good number of takes of the crowds watching the event, their reactions, concentrating in some of the principals including a few lines of dialogue between the high priest and his people, another with Casper.

It was cold, very cold and getting colder, the day was running fast. The nailing of each of the women and the raising up to the post, one at a time, took time, a long time.

There were so many things Jac planned to do but at one point he realized that the time was running short and he was not going to be able to complete what he wanted to accomplish that day.

Image

There’s a line in Pygmalion where Hendrix (Jac’s character) says to Vera (Mila’s character) sometimes, in cinema, things don’t happen the way one wants, this is one of those times.

He was living that impossible moment that afternoon of July 9th. He was very upset, tense, and everyone could see that. He summoned his production assistant to tell her that there wasn’t going to be a wrap-up party, not then, maybe not ever.

The sun was behind the hills, and the cold wind was increasing, Jac knew he had to finish and made sure to have some long shots of the crowd leaving the area and some very long shots of the three women suffering their agony and freezing up on their crosses. When he felt he had enough of a long shot of the Crucified Three, Jac called it a day and the women let out a collective sigh of relief, accompanied by curses and some laughter.

Image

The cast and the crew went back up to the changing area and then to have their meal. There wasn’t going to be any drinking. There was a larger group this time around, so the main table wasn’t enough for everyone. There were two other tables in smaller dinning rooms. One of those rooms, with a table for 6 with very nice views, was taken by the protagonists and a couple of the supporting actors.

Jac decided to share a table in the cold and windy outside with the two drivers. Jac thought at that moment that if the Crucified Three could put up with the freezing wind while naked and crucified, then he could certainly take some cold wind, wearing his hoody and having some food.

Maybe some people thought he wanted to share his time with the drivers, which was partly true, but the main reason he stayed out in the cold was because he didn’t want to talk to anyone in the cast or crew, he was in a terrible mood, the tension had gotten to him.

Image

One good and interesting moment came when Jac was arriving to the dining area when he came across a friend from the very old days, with whom he had a moment or two way back then and who was visiting the resort with some family. The woman was impressed to see all those actors climbing up the hill to the resort. She even got some autographs from a couple of them that apparently were known to her.

After the meal was over and all things were packed in the transportation vehicles, the entire entourage headed back to the city. Jac was silent all the way. He had to decide if he needed another day.

But the funds were short and the time was shorter.

Image

With a baby shoe string budget… or maybe a tong string budget, Jac was pulling out a big production in terms of what was involved and in a relatively short time, in less than 12 days of production, not 5 to 6 weeks, as it normally happens.

The style of production wasn’t new to him. Seditiosa is a very low budget film by any standards, yes. Films like Maleficarum, Justine, Dead But Dreaming, Olalla and even Barbazul, that ended up in festivals and were screened at movie theaters, are also very low budget films and yet they have the look of big budget movies. But each of them had more time. Maleficarum was shot in 5 weeks, of 5 days shooting per week, and there was no big Make-Up work because the protagonists, Amy and Mila didn’t have tattoos. However, none of those films needed to transport 40 people to the faraway location, nor there was the need to feed them all every one of those shooting days. There were other differences too. But the basic issues of time and money were the big concerns.

The most important and valuable part of this production was that Jac and the Crucified Three were putting their soul in the making of a daring film, and what was even more precious is that the three protagonists were truly suffering for the art. The crucifixion scene had to be as good it should be, regardless of how little money there was.

Image

There was a filmmakers conference in La Paz a few years back, where some well known filmmakers from Europe visited the Andean, landlocked country to talk about low budget films as the way to go in countries like Bolivia. The low budget films they had in mind were from 250,000 up. They didn’t know Jac, of course. He didn’t go to the conference, he thought it would be a waste of his time. Of course, if they were willing to pay him, he could teach them a thing or two.

No, producing a big film with little money wasn’t new to Jac, but this time it was more difficult for many reasons, handling the big cast, the far off location, all the details. All of that got to him that day. And now he was facing the troubling possibility that he needed another day. He alerted his principal suffering cast of that eventuality. They went pale.

He told them he was going to go over the materials he shot that day and decide if he needed another grueling day for those wonderful, beautiful and courageous women to suffer another long and cold day on the cross. I’ll discuss what was decided in our next post.

Image

We started a Pre Sale campaign for those interested in watching the film long before its official release in November.

Our backers and supporters will see the film as soon as the first cut is done, anytime soon. We’ll be announcing the details in the coming days. We’re playing with some possibilities.

After that first cut, the film will have a final cut, sound mix, color correction, subtitling, and so on. When that is done we will release it to ALL our supporters, including all those who are contributing in the pre sale campaign. We will have a date of that release during next week.

The official World Avant-Premiere will happen in the middle of November, at a film festival and soon after at a local movie house, yet to be decided.

After that the film will be in all our platforms, stores, etc.

Post by Curious23 »

I been following the Red Feline Chronicles site. The latest part was the crucifixion scene. I was disappointed because the girls had loincloths on.

The three girls were not naked when they were whipped. This is OK because that's how the Romans would have done it, so it's realistic at least. But it looks like the victims will still have their loincloths on when they are crucified? This is not authentic because the victims were always stripped naked before they were crucified by the Romans. For the sake of realism, I thought the director would have the girls completely naked when they are crucified?

I was really looking forward to this film but now I think I will be disappointed. Sorry, but I am not sure I will want to see the film anymore.

The Crucified Three

Image

The night of the 9th of July, after the most tension filled and overwhelming day of production, Jac sat on his favorite sofa in front of the large monitor with either a Belgium or a Dutch bottle of beer in hand and his cats keeping him company, all five of them in different couches, while the computer transferred the files from the camera card to the hard disk. He was not ready to look at the material, thus he decided to watch one of his favorite shows instead.

The next morning, after his matinal duties, he began to look at the footage he shot the day before, there were some great shots, but he knew he didn’t have all he wanted or needed to complete the film and the need to go back to the location was obvious.

Image

He didn’t need to go over the clips to come to that conclusion. He knew he was not done the moment he called it a day that eventful Sunday.

Nevertheless, it was not an easy decision to make. The days after that Sunday were complicated and he was deeply aware that it was going to get even thornier.

The week of July 10th began with the assembling of the new footage and as he watched the material his thought process had already decided what he wanted to do and that he needed one more day of production. He began contacting his main cast and crew to figure out a date. All of them had some things going for that coming weekend, so there was an initial agreement for a week later, preferably a Sunday because Simonne had work on Saturdays.

Image

When the chosen week began, Dani announced that she was sick, apparently spending a very long time on the cross, naked, whipped by the freezing wind, had some effect on her health and she didn’t want to risk getting sicker that weekend. A new date was agreed upon, July 29th, and there were going to be only 6 actors: the Crucified Three, Casper and the two torturers. The idea was to concentrate on the crucified women, to do all the nasty things to them necessary to complete the Crucifixion Sequence.

Image

But the waiting time between shooting days was not wasted. From the moment the production of Seditiosa started, Jac began assembling the footage, selecting shots to build the scenes, and in most cases, editing them together. He was advancing on the post production at the same time he was extremely busy getting ready to wrap the production.

The chosen date for the last day of production was at hand. The small cast and the crew arrived to the location and began to work. The make up work on Dani and Mila to cover their tattoos takes a long time, a couple of hours, so the first to go to the Make-Up room was Simonne. The plan was to begin shooting her close shots on the cross, while Dani or Mila got ready.

Image

Simonne was put through a number of situations for over an hour, including the nailing of her feet. The next to arrive was Mila, who then suffered at the hands of her torturers. She was raised up to her cross, her feet were nailed, and she was left to suffer some time on her cross, like Simonne before her.
Finally, Dani arrived to go over her suffering moments like Mila and Simonne did.

All the actions in the film tell part of the story, the nailing of the feet does not happen right away and there’s a reason for it, a dramatic reason. It begins a new process in the execution of the three women, one that turns into a climatic orgy of pain.

After all three had their different close shots, the moment came to do all the general shots that couldn’t be done before.

Image

The Crucified Three were subjected to another day of extreme suffering on the cross, under the harsh conditions of the weather and it wasn’t until the sun began to go behind the hills that Jac decided the suffering women had enough. He could tell because of their pleading eyes, their trembling, bloodied and naked bodies, and the muffled cries, almost whispers, coming out of them as they suffered the anguish of their time on the cross: Are we done? The Crucified Three cried out after more torture and humiliations finally took them to end of their suffering.

Image

When Jac said It’s done! there was a sigh of relief heard miles away. The Crucified Three were taken down from their crosses, the production assistants rushed to them with blankets to cover them from the cold wind, there was some laughter, some comments and more laughter. Dani commented If this came out good, it was worth it.

The suffering cast got on their way to wash and get dressed while the crew was busy gathering al the equipment to take it all back, including the crossbeams that were going to be taken down AFTER Jac got some shots of the empty crosses from the cliff above.

Image

As Jac stood up on the hill overlooking the location, recording the empty crosses for posterity and for an early scene, he wondered if he had all he needed. Maybe if he had another 10 or 20 thousand to work with… or even better, another 50G … But he had what he had and he did what most producers would not manage to do even if they had those 50G extra, all that was left now was to make all that material work as a movie; however, time was rushing past, he only had a month ahead of him to complete the post production to make a good number of people happy… he made a promise, after all, even if it wasn’t really a promise.

Image

When we launched the fundraising campaign in October we were told that the funds would be released a few days after it concluded 60 days later… that was the beginning of December, so he calculated around 8 months to produce the film, from writing the script to post production. The magic month was August. However, IndieGoGo did not release the funds until January. Oh well.

Image

We are still running the Pre Sale campaign for those willing to support our work and would be interested in watching the film long before its official release and many wonder when are we going to finally release it.

Our backers and supporters will see the film as soon as the first cut is done, anytime soon. It is my understanding that by Sunday the 17th the final editing for the first cut will be done. During the rest of the week Jac will go over the entire film, fix what needs to be fixed, and once he’s satisfied he’ll process a clip of that raw, in a beautiful way, first cut of Seditiosa which will be shown to our backers and supporters.

After that clip is done, Jac will embark on the final cut, sound mix, subtitling, color corrections and after all that work the film will be done and ready for mastering.

After mastering we’ll prepare the assets to upload the film to our store and to the platforms where we sell and stream our films.

During all this time we are preparing the key art for the film, the information for the stores, the trailer and so on.

Our schedule looks like this.
  • Before the end of this month we will be uploading the film for first viewing for the privileged ones.
  • In October we’ll be releasing the film to those who contributed to the IndieGoGo campaign and after they all get their copy, we’ll be releasing it to our pre buyers.
  • At the end of November we will have the Official Premiere of the film at an International Film Festival and we’re considering a limited theatrical release, after that, at the beginning of December, the film will be up in our stores, platforms and so on.

The Coming Of Seditiosa

Image

Thank you to all who remember and sent their best wishes on my Birthday!!

You must also know that both, Jac and I, celebrate the same birthday date. Yes, the 7th of October is my birthday as well as Jac’s but with 13 years difference.

Jac had all the intention of missing his birthday this time, so he could finish the job he was doing by Saturday evening; however, on Friday night, the 6th, he was dragged out of the house by his cousin to go to a club where Erix, Jac’s son, was performing. So he went. A couple of beers wont hurt, he told himself.

Next morning Jac got up early enough with a bit of a hangover, he not only had beers, he also had rum and not very little. As far as he was concerned, he had a good birthday celebration the night before, so he sat in front of his computer to get into the work; but then his family, led by his brother, dragged him out of the house to a huge family party they call Salteñada, where the main dish are some exotic and delicious meat pies… but there were tons of other food, and drinks, and cake, and candles and the party lasted ALL DAY, the last guests left after midnight. The party began at noon.

His brother had sent invitations to a lot of people with the theme Jac’s eternal 17 years.

Image

Jac decided to work on the film all Sunday, but he had some issues that day too, people arrived to visit him to continue with the celebration … all in all, his entire weekend was dedicated to celebrate his new year on this planet. There were over 50 people at the party. Mostly relatives, but some of the regular cast and crew were attending too.

I’m not in the same city, so I did not participate in person. My bday weekend was more modest, with few very close friends and family enjoying food and drinks. But we called each other and participated in both parties by zoom. It was beautiful. But Jac was very dictatorial. He ordered me to take the weekend off, completely. So I did. I took the entire weekend off.

Image
These are some of the people that went on and on until past midnight

We are in the middle of October and the tensions are very high where our incredibly dedicated Team of One is working to release Seditiosa.

There are intense discussions between Jac the director, Jac the editor and, most importantly Jac the producer who is wielding a heavy whip to make those other two work faster, particularly the editor, in whose hands the fate for the film rests.

At one point Jac the director, who was watching the work closely, said to the editor: That’s good, I think that’s good. Set it up so I can see it all together and process a clip of the one hour and 15 minutes part for me and work on the fine cut of the last 20 min post haste!

The editor looked into the director’s eyes reflected on the screen with a smirk on his face, and proceeded to do just that, without any promises, while the director wandered into other fantastic projects in his brain.

Image

When the clip was done and was approved by the director, the editor passed it along to the producer for him to upload it to Vimeo so the uncredited Associate Producers, the initiators of the film could see it and render their opinion.

Jac the producer sent the link to me so that I could share it with the privileged two, who then had the chance to see most of the film without the benefit of color correction and sound mix which they understood.

I’m really happy to report that the film, or at least most of the film so far, made a great impression on its very first three viewers, one of those viewers was me. I will comment about my impressions in the future, all I have to say right now is that it looks amazing… ehem… to me.

Image

In my experience, showing the film for the first time to people who are behind it can be stressful. Will they like it? Will they be disappointed? The reality in making movies is that movie directors cannot please everyone, not even themselves, ask Woody Allen.

Another reality is that the original vision goes through a thousand changes as the film is made, even during post production… and that can cause people to not be very happy with the end result. That’s normal and there’s nothing one can do about it. Some people will love it, some people wont.

Image

Having said that and having watched the film as well, I have to say that I’m truly impressed by it all. So I share the feelings of the Privileged Two.
Incredible stuff, Margot. The whipping scene was gripping, and the carrying scenes contain some truly stunning landscape shots.
Image

The whipping scene was the harder to shot and even harder to edit, so many shots were involved, so many situations, and there were so many difficulties that made Jac the director bitch and bitch some more. But I have to say that he pulled it off.

Early in his career, Jac learned that the editing of the film creates its very soul. It is the most important part of making a movie.

Image

When Jac the editor was going over the footage, he bitched a lot more than the director. That’s a fact. He even blamed Jac the Cinematographer for all the problems he had putting the film together. Why is that stupid guy wearing a hat? He screamed at the cinematographer. Didn’t you see that? WTF!

The cinematographer did not respond, he was just as annoyed… there were many little things like that at times an the editor had to deal with them.

Image
This was a good morning! Viewed the film for breakfast with a good coffee. Great stuff M! I salute the project as a whole!
After having the Associate Producers watch the film, at least 1 hr 15 minutes of it, and exchanging comments, with me, mostly, Jac took a good look at the film, specially the last 20 minutes, which Jac the editor had worked on for a couple of days, and decided, as a good director would, that there were some things that could be done to that last part of the movie to make it even more intense.

Some critical parts of what was already cut in the clip he saw, had to be cut again and merged into the last 20 minutes. A complicated task, the editor complained, the cinematographer did not shoot it with that in mind, he almost whispered under his breath, but he didn’t have to, he simply transmitted his thoughts to the director, very much aware that the cinematographer had total access to those angry thoughts. The director made me do that, the cinematographer was heard screaming from way back in Jac’s brain. The director wanted to blame the producer… but at the end just shrugged his shoulders

So, the editor got back at work, to comply with the director’s wishes, he was compeled to open his mind as he did for the very elaborate and intense whipping scene. He marveled at the mental suggestions the director sent his way. It is so obvious! the editor was heard screaming by the pigeons up on the roof and the cats on the couches in the editing room. He got very excited about the possibilities but first consulted with the cinematographer.

Those nice open shots with all six women on them will disappear, he told him. WTF! the cinematographer screamed from a far corner where he was working on some test shots with Ligia. But after hearing the reasons why those shots will be gone, he had to agree, reluctantly at first.

Image

The editor worked on his idea, on an alternative Premiere Pro Timeline so as not to loose what he had worked on already. After cutting, here, cutting there, bringing that shot here, that shot there and eliminating those shots back there, he had something to show. All four of them, Director, Editor, Cinematographer and Producer, sat in front of the monitor, the big monitor, and all four in one person, though two green eyes, saw the new cut. All four of them said … Wow!

It looked that good.

Great, finish it and let me know when I can share a clip. Exclaimed the director and the Editor is working on that right now.

Image

Meanwhile, the inside discussions by our team are interesting. Some think that the film should get a big release in movie theaters, that it will be controversial because of the subject matter, a female Christ, which has a strong feminist angle, particularly these days when the Nobel Peace award went to a woman who is in prison for defying the rulers in Iran and was sentenced to 154 lashes, apart from a jail sentence. I read a bit about that amazing woman and she’s very much like Yahel and Judith, facing practically the same kind of paradigm two millennia apart.

The theme of Seditiosa is both ancient and contemporary, that makes the film incredibly interesting and the way it is portrayed has the potential to attract viewers not very familiar with Jac’s work and it might very well reach a larger audience way beyond our fans. Having a theatrical release is becoming more and more an attractive proposition.

Image

We are in the last stage of the project. We are working on the details of the release all this week. That includes de sound mix, color correction, title and credits, subtitles, and other little details. When that is completed we’ll process the master of the film.

Our plan looks like this.
  • We will be uploading a clip of the complete film for first viewing for the privileged ones any moment now. This clip will not be the master.
  • Once the master is done, we’ll be releasing the film to those who contributed to the IndieGoGo campaign and to our pre buyers, we will be uploading the film to the platform as early as next week. We’re thinking of a premiere type of streaming on October 31st, on Halloween, yes. As soon as the film has been uploaded to the platform we’ll send links to it to our supporters.
  • At the end of November we will have the Official Premiere of the film at an International Film Festival and at a movie theater for its limited theatrical release, after that, the film will be up in our stores, platforms and so on.

The Light (Yahel) At The End Of The Tunnel

Image

Yahel means The Light, at least that’s what some people say. An ancient name, of course, like all those names we are so familiar with, like Judith or Magdalena. Names that reached the farthest corners of the entire planet. You can find Judiths or Magdalenas in any part of our Shekina (Mother Earth)

It’s only fitting that our protagonist has Yahel, for a name. Jesus called himself The Light Of The World… in some reports, and that is how he is described in at least four of those reports and many epistles, and billions of sermons through the last 2,000 years plus. Yahel is the appropriate name for a female Jesus. Right?

That Light is at the end of what appeared to be, for some, a very long tunnel… not that long for those who know better.

And as Yahel the Light comes out of the tunnel to see the light of a projector, or the light of a gigantic screen, it is important to appreciate it for what it is, in all its beauty, and not for what it is not.

Image

Yahel has a basic believe, Shekina, the Mother is the source of life, everything comes from her, which is at odds with those who believe in the invisible God. For Yahel there isn’t an invisible God. A subject that transcends to our days when in the words of Hubert Reeves, man worships an invisible God and massacres a visible nature, not knowing that this nature he destroys is that invisible God he worships.

That’s the basic believe that nurtures Yahel in her mission of healing and teaching others.

But Judith believes that Yahel should reveal herself to her people to led them away from the Empire and become their queen, because in the rebellious woman’s words: You come from the house of the Great King. A direct descendant of the great King and his favorite lover, Janai, a woman of great powers, one the them being a writer and teacher and master of the arts of healing, all passed through the ages to Yahel.

Magdalena, in the other hand, is vocal about them going away from it all, and dedicate their lives to write, read and teach. She contends that all that empty talk will lead them to a terrible outcome.

Image

Jac had an experience recently, one he didn’t expect, that changed his attitude from working his ass under undue pressure to one that he prefers the most. The undue pressure he was working under demanded of him to rush the job, but he decided to do the work according to its needs and priorities and he worked with the sound without rushing, just working and working.

The sound mix, which is essential, and takes its own time, occupied Jac’s time these past few days. Some bits can be done in seconds, some in minutes, some in hours… One begins the work thinking that it is going to take one day and when the day is over there’s only 20 minutes of the film done. But maybe the next day the rest of the film will go smoothly.. but no. And it went on, maybe for another day, and another day… but before the week was over, it was DONE!

Image

The adventure is going through the last technical efforts to make the film look and sound great. After the sound mix was done, he put his mind to the color correction of the film, to make it all look even. The harsh light of the location was a difficult thing to work with, thus the need to work on the image to make it all look the way it should. There are two main parts of that work. Making all the shots look basically the same, as far as exposure, contrast and so on, and then giving it a look. Maybe the way it looks, all nice and colorful, or maybe making it warmer, or colder, or in between.

But that job has its own time and problems. It can take hours, or days. So, a decision was made. To get the color correction as close to what Jac thinks should be and process a clip, to get a feeling of how it is going. And if that clip is good enough, to make a master to then make the version for a pre release. All that work is being done now. So the suffering continues.

Image

If all that processing works out between today and tomorrow early morning, Jac will be uploading the film, the pre release version, to Vimeo, to then set it up for those early supporters to watch it, if they wish, and soon after it will be set for those who pre bought the film. I will have the details of this tomorrow as I get all the information.

During the rest of the week, Jac will be finishing the color correction, setting up the assets for Downloads and DVDs, setting up the trailer, and all that jazz for its official release, which might come sooner that expected.

During the coming month of November the film will begin its Via Crucis to reach the entire planet, one home at a time, or maybe two… maybe some crowds will watch it at the same time, maybe some will love it, maybe some will hate it, it always happens that way, but one thing is sure, Seditiosa will begin its very long journey and we hope it will be long and prosperous, like Maleficarum and Justine… maybe even better than those two already classics.

Image

Our plan looks like this now.
  • We will be uploading a clip of the film for those who contributed to the IndieGoGo campaign and to our pre buyers, we will be uploading the film to the platform as early as TOMORROW. If all goes well, it will be a premiere type of streaming that will begin on October 31st, on Halloween, yes. The film will be available for viewing until the time it’s ready for its official release to the world.
  • As soon as the film has been uploaded to the platform we’ll send links to it to our supporters. The details of how this will work is now under consideration.
  • Before the end of November we are planning to have the Official Premiere of the film at an International Film Festival and at a movie theater for a limited theatrical release, but at the same time that, the film will be up in our stores, platforms and so on.
And so, the end of this adventure is at hand. We all have grown a bit more with this experience, and before the week is over we will be already on our road to many more adventures, and there are many.

Just got my pre-order link. I see that Red Feline has joined the remainder of the internet in... 2014? And finally released a film on a regular video streaming service in 1080p.

Might you be persuaded to re-release older videos in a downloadable format in 1080p? I'd happily buy them again. Obviously the really old films may not be available in FHD but I'd think the more recent ones were just compressed for streaming. Fluxplayer is just... bad.

We have have some of the films in Vimeo for rentals. We thought that a lot more people would love to see the films for 3.99 in high quality rather than getting the DVD quality we sell them for in our stores. No such interest. People still prefer the DVD quality of the films. Really. We had one film uploaded in 1080p version to be downloaded as well as the regular download and the DVD... that version of the film got two or three buyers.

Sometimes I think a lot of people would love to have a VHS copy. Really.

However, we're looking into the possibility of setting up a streaming channel with all our films, ALL of them, even the documentaries, where for a monthly fee you would watch them all. We have so many films that maybe it's an option.

To make that run well we would need at least 500 subscribers on a steady basis. We don't know if that would work. So, for the time being, we'll continue selling our films our old fashion way.
