While not technically a sequel, this movie does rely on the viewer to have at least a passing knowledge of the very good film The Prison Punishment Show, in which four female convicts were whipped on a televised program for the pleasure of an in-studio and pay-per-view audience. One woman in that audience, Lori, was seen laughing with glee as each unfortunate inmate was brought onto the stage and given her sentence and then whipped mercilessly by a prison guard. In this film, we see each of the women that Lori had laughed at being given the opportunity to exact their revenge, hence the title Revenge on the Laughing Girl.
The movie opens with Lori blindfolded and tied to a chair wearing only a ratty white tank top and panties. As the camera pans back we see that she is in a windowless cell, with no furniture except for the chair and a toilet. Harsh white light bathes the interior of the room. Paint is peeling from the grungy walls. This is obviously not a pleasant place to be.
A narrator, Tippi from the first movie, gives a quick backstory as to how Lori came to be tied to the chair and why. We're treated to a montage of excerpts from the first film, and then the current action begins. The camera jumps from one close-up of Lori's body to another, inspecting the bonds that hold her to the chair, then a close up of a silhouetted nipple hidden under the torn white shirt, then the blindfold, then her bound wrists. A triangle of white fabric peeks from between her young thighs as she struggles to break free from her captivity. But it is no use. There is no escape for her.
Tippi speaks to her victim through an intercom, observing the girl's reactions on a surveillance camera. Then she comes in to address her prisoner in person, taunting the girl, asking her if she has a headache and explaining that it is a side effect of the serum and a symptom that she is going to die soon.
I love this scene. To make a good GIMP movie, you have to have a good Evil Guy that can match or exceed the talents of the hero-victim. Tippi does a good job of selling her role of an evil tormentor (are there any other kind?) and playing with Lori like a cat plays with a mouse. Lori, for her part, does a good job of playing off of Tippi's dialogue and selling her role as the damsel in distress. They work well together, and this scene really serves up the promise of some great character drama. But does it live up to that promise? Keep reading to find out.

Lori convinces Tippi to remove her blindfold, so that she can recognize her tormentor. Tippi, smiling wickedly, allows the girl to look at her and explains to her captive what's going to be done to her. Again, some great character interplay between the two of them, and it comes so natural that I wonder how much of it was actually scripted versus improvised between two talented actresses. If there's one complaint I have with this scene, it's that the mood music overwhelms the dialogue, but that's a small complaint because, as with all of Mood Pictures' films, the dialogue is in Hungarian with English subtitles, so you really don't lose anything by the dialogue being obscured by the music because you can read along anyway.
Bonnie is the first ex-con to come visit poor Lori. The helpless girl is brought onto the stage and tied in the exact same position that the previous four women were tied, and then the whipping begins.
After a dozen stokes of the whip and the resulting screams, Tippi decides that, if Lori isn't going to laugh during her own whipping, then she shouldn't be allowed to scream either, and a large wooden bite gag is tied against the girl's mouth. Tippi remains devoid of emotion as the whipping resumes, each kiss of the leather instrument finding soft skin that reddens deeply and instantaneously. Lori screams through her gag and dances with pain, stretched between the wide-forked arms of the whipping frame.
Twenty-five strokes. Twenty-five strokes of the whip fall against the girl's soft back, each lash tearing a scream from the girl's throat, each lash breaking her spirit with pain. Just when you begin to wonder if she is going to be whipped to death, it is over, and it is time for a new torment.
She's unbound from the frame and taken back to her cell to recuperate, where she's redressed (for some odd reason) back in her white top and panties. Her wrists are bound with rough rope and bloody stripes seep through the fabric of her shirt.
Roxy is next, and she tells her captive that the poor girl is to receive twenty-five strokes of the cane on her bare ass. Once again Lori is dragged out of her cell and bound to the whipping apparatus, but this time it is Tippi who is to wield the instrument of torture. I will pause here to mention that, as much as I like Tippi as a victim, she also makes a very good executioner. She has her power poses down pat, and really evokes that cold detachment that makes her that much more creepy when wielding the cane.
The next scene finds us – and Lori – back in her cell, where she is tied Arms-Over-Head against the bars of her cage. Now it is Nicole's turn to exact revenge against the Laughing Girl. Will she be beaten? Will she be whipped? Will she feel the kiss of the cane against her back, her butt, or the soles of her feet? No! She will be given a new tattoo.
What?
No seriously, that's her punishment. She's getting a tattoo of a dream catcher on her forearm. That's about as exciting as, well, just about anything you can think of that bores you to tears, so I'll spare you the details of the procedure.
Lastly, we come to the most ruthless of the tortures to be acted against Lori. It is time for Tippi, the vilest of the vile, to have her crack at the helpless girl. Once again Lori is bound between the arms of the whipping apparatus. This time, Tippi explains, she won't be told how many strokes she is to receive, nor with what instrument she is to be beaten. Her punishment will be her own fear.
Have you ever told someone that you would get your vengeance against them, some time, somewhere, when they least expect it? Of course you have, because even if you never do anything to them, you know that their imagination will be their greatest enemy. That makes this final punishment that much sweeter. We've all done it at least once.
I absolutely love Tippi's expression in this scene. Look at that smile; is that dripping with evil intent or what? She absolutely owns this role, and perhaps this entire movie. Instead of calling it Revenge on the Laughing Girl, a more appropriate title would have been "Tippi Torments the Troublesome Tart". Or something like that. Anyway, I liked the first and second torments, and I loved this one.
Nothing is more painful than fresh wounds on top of old ones, and this scene does not disappoint. Lori's pain is palpable, her screams almost bone-chilling. Yet Tippi does not relent. Look at the expressions on these women's faces. They don't care how much Lori screams. Roxy looks as if she is relishing the sound of a woman's suffering. Nicole is certainly enjoying it immensely. They will continue to beat her until they are finished, no matter how much Lori screams and pulls on the cables holding her fast to the apparatus.
And how do you end this movie after such a great scene? I can't say I understood any undertones of the plot the producers were trying to convey, so I'll leave any interpretations of the ending to you, the viewer.
This isn't the best Mood Picture I've seen. The plot feels a bit rushed and I can't help but wonder if there wasn't a thought of having a different ending that had to be cut due to time constraints. But, with the exception of the tattoo scene, all of the whipping, caning, and beating scenes are very well done and definitely worth the price of admission. The stills I've presented here don't do the scenes justice; you really should see them with motion and sound to get the full impact of what Mood has delivered with this film, and what Lori sacrificed to bring it to us.
Is it as engaging as Fear? No. Is it as psychologically terrifying as any of the Milgram Experiment films? No. Is it at least as good as The Prison Punishment Show that preceded it? Almost. I liked PPS for the imagination behind the stock concept of a women-in-prison film. This film doesn't really have that. We don't see our damsel being captured. We don't really get an explanation of how they found her in the first place. There's no mystery to solve and no question to answer. Lori is already their prisoner, and that's all we need to know, right? So straight into the action we go, and three out of the four action scenes are very, very good with enough acting between Tippi and Lori to sell the plot. If you're just watching a movie for the nude parts, you'll love these. If you want a bit more story with a cathartic ending, you may be a bit disappointed.
