Sacred Flesh (2000)

This movie easily falls into the category of nunsploitation. I read one review that criticized it for having a weak storyline that provided an excuse to string together a series of softcore sex scenes. As I watched it, I suspected it was the work of a deeply conflicted Catholic working unsuccessfully through some serious faith issues, and not a few repressed sexual issues regarding nuns. It is actually a series of dialogues between church archetypes both real and imagined, discussing the wholly dysfunctional attitude of the Catholic Church toward sex. (Not that the Protestant view of sex is any less dysfunctional.) All that being said, it is also pretentious and sophomoric at best. It might be best viewed with the sound turned down.

I will be focusing on the GIMP bits, with the softcore bits thrown in for good measure.

19:00 minutes. Brief images of nuns abusing and disfiguring themselves. The best image involves self-flagellation with a bare bloody back and side boob.

Sacred Flesh

24:00 minutes. Sister Elizabeth recounts the confessed lustful thoughts of Sister Sarah (Michelle Throne) that drove Sister Sarah to writhe around on the floor in and eventually mostly out of her habit as she masturbated. There is explicit nudity and spirited self-exploration, and it lasts for about 5 minutes.

Sacred Flesh

31:00 Minutes.: The confessions of Sister Mary (Amanda Dawkins) and Sister Helena (Hannah Callow) come next. The sisters attempt to scourge their sinful thoughts away by whipping each other.

Sacred Flesh

Instead, they get turned on by the pain and succumb to rampant lesbian sex culminating in surprisingly explicit 69 action. They are still mostly in their habits and I have to wonder if this is not every Catholic schoolboy's secret fantasy. This part takes about 7 minutes.

Sacred Flesh

44:30 minutes. The confession of Novice Sister Catherine (Majella Shepherd) has greater GIMP potential, but still falls flat. Catherine the novice is convinced by Father James and Father Peter that she must experience sex first before she can fully appreciate being chaste. Accommodating churchmen that they are, they partially undress her, feel her up, lick her, suck her, kiss her and presumably fuck her, although we don't see that. (Or, in the overwrought words of Sister Elizabeth, "For them, her body became a vessel for their corrupt seed.") This part lasts about 5 and a half minutes, shows Sister Catherine covering her eyes in shame or humiliation, and ends with Sister Catherine on an altar curled into a fetal position crying.

Sacred Flesh

59:00 minutes. The "blasphemies" of Sister Jane (Sarah McLean), Sister Helen (Nicole Bouchet), and Sister Teresa (Cassandra Bochsler), who victimize and brutalize Sister Ann (Anneka Svenska), provide the the GIMP climax of this film. Sister Ann rats out Sister Helen for masturbating, although Helen, Jane and Teresa are probably sapphic lovers so why Ann didn't rat them all out at once is odd. Sister Helen is punished, so she and her two cronies ambush Sister Ann and take their revenge.

They tie Sister Ann to a cross and undress her enough to reveal her breasts and fondle her. They open her robe and one of them straddles her and suddenly it turns into a lesbian sex scene, with tongues in full motion. So, not so much nonconsensual any more. To further un-GIMP it, her hands come untied so she can grope and fondle in return.

Sacred Flesh

Meanwhile, to spice it all up, the three amiga sistas (heh) are all in a lesbian group sex encounter session themselves, which is confusing since one of them theoretically is munching on Sister Ann. It all devolves into a lesbian softcore scene.

At the very end, we do get a symbolic crucifixion scene that makes for good imagery but lacks any GIMP feel at all.

Sacred Flesh

This film is mostly a fully illustrated sacrilegious screed against Catholic sexual repression. There are misogynistic priests, an old and ugly disapproving matron nun, and young and sexy wayward nuns. So there's your Catholic Church trifecta right there.

This is a hard movie to grade. If you enjoy seeing nuns going at it, you will probably really enjoy this movie. It was extremely rare for the nuns to ever be completely undressed, meaning you are always aware they are nuns. GIMP-wise, there are brief self-flagellation and whipping scenes, one two-priests-on-one-novice molestation scene, one bound-to-a-cross and molested scene, and a brief crucifixion scene. None of them really pay off, though, in a meaningful GIMP way. Plus, lots of nudity and lesbian softcore sex. So this gets a D+ for actual GIMP, although if you have a nun sex fetish then it will rate significantly higher.

This is currently on Netflix Streaming. It is also available at Amazon.com. It is unrated everywhere I see it.
