The remake of MARTYRS has been released today both on-demand and DVD. I watched the on-demand version... it is beautifully done, lacking only the most important parts of the original version. They totally spoiled the perfect conclusion of the original movie.
Once again, I highly advise you to watch the original Martyrs if you haven't done so far. It's a French horror movie combining at least three different horror genres in a way it surprises even once you think nothing will surprise you any more.
I would be happy to write a review of the movie, but as you may see I am struggling with English, so a long essay would be a torture for the dear reader from me.
Also, it is very hard to write about this movie in a way which doesn't spoil too much.
The film is about a group of people who torture some chosen females. Both children and young adults. The torture them merciless in a cold inhuman way day after day with several different methods. Not for their enjoyment... But why then? It turns out in the last third of the movie.
Here are a few sentences from the 'others' when one of them explains what they do:
"It's easy to create a victim.
You lock a person up in the dark,
and they begin to suffer...
And then you feed that suffering,
methodically, precisely to make it last.
The subject goes through a number of stages...and then there is trauma..."
... here I must stop before revealing too much....
The movie can be divided into three equally long parts. The first makes you think you watch a revenge movie (revenge of the girl who could escape from this group after being tortured when she was a child). The second part _almost_ transforms to a supernatural horror subgenre -for me this was the least appealing- and the third part is far most the strongest: The torture porn. The changes between each parts are quite surprising, (so I may have spoiled it a little), believe me there are quite a lot surprises in this movie. Once you think you saw a cliché it will turn out it's a little bit more. (Unless you watch the US version)
The conclusion of the French is a big ... WHAT??? FUCKKK!!! :)))))
The US version is almost a copy paste of the original version they made a very few changes in the storyline, skipped most gore scenes, no nudity at all, the changes in the story are mostly in the last 10 minutes, and these changes were all unnecessary, and painful mistakes in my opinion.
My reactions here were?
What? ... eh... fuck...:((((
People here used to grade the films they review.
French version: A (as a horror), very brief nudity.
US version: C (as a horror), no nudity.
The on-demand version is 4-5 usd for 24 hours, which definitely worth it, but ONLY after you watch the French version!!! (The above photo is from the original French version)
