My perusal of the latest Redbox offerings in search of a low-budget mainstream gem with at least a modicum of GIMP took me last evening to Junkyard Dog. As with so many of these, it fell into the "coulda-been-a-contenda" category, But for those who might be interested, here's a rundown.
Spoiler Alert (though I can't imagine that anyone will rent this for the suspense.)
A cutie, but with way too much goth makeup, runs out of gas along a desolate stretch of road. Along comes our leading man who talks her into trucking her car to a gas station to "fill-her-up" so to speak. When she turns to look at him after passing a gas station, a right to the chops ends the discussion. He drops her into a room-size underground bunker, where she spends the good part of the rest of the movie. It's pretty obvious to our young victim when he brings down dinner exactly what the mystery meat is. He takes her clothing and has her wear short denim shorts and a shirt that he forces her to tie as a halter top. This is the point at which most mainstream movies fall off the rails. Not this one. This guy is a serial rapist who has his way with women before having them for dinner. (Spoilage Alert): At one point we see our hero having dinner with his quite deceased parents, who he has wheeled out of a freezer for a repast with their loving son.
Unfortunately (this is mainstream after all) the rape scenes are quick-framed, lacking in much nudity and shot from low angles But they are repeated a surprising number of times -- including once in front of a female FBI agent who he captured and handcuffed to a nearby table. Not a GIMP classic by far. But the terror and then resignation of the kidnap victim were well done. And for those GIMPERS who can fill in blanks and come in with low expectations, it might be worth a look.
