A Bring Out the GIMP (Girls in Merciless Peril) Movie Review

Goya's Ghosts

Reviewed by Sardu

Goya's Ghosts stars Natalie Portman. She is raped in prison by a priest and has a child.

This movie is weird. Its completely fiction, but based around the life of the painter Goya... who painted some freaky shit. Poe and Lovecraft frequently referenced him.

Portman's character is such a sweet innocent at the beginning of the movie, who has the misfortune of not liking pork. Thus she is accused of being a Jewish sympathizer and "put to the question."

My favorite part of the movie is when her family invites the head priest to dinner, and puts him to the question! They get him to sign a confession to being a monkey.

Doesn't help. She spends fifteen years in the prison, has a kid by the priest that raped her, her father exhausts his fortune trying to free her, and when Napoleon invades her entire family is killed.

She however is freed because of the invasion, bent, diseased, mentally broken, only to return the burnt husk of her home to find her family slaughtered.

She spends the rest of the movie looking for her "baby", who is now grown (she doesn't realize that the baby grew up), and working as a prostitute (also played by Portman with an "overbite" prosthetic). Her daughter has a baby, but ends up being deported to America... and she ends up finding the baby, mistaking it for her own, and taking it with her.

The priest that raped her ends up discredited when the monkey confession comes to light... ends up going to France and becoming part of the invading French army. Later, when the Spanish repel the invasion, he's executed. Portman's character sees the execution going on, and is pleased to see the father of their "baby" (her daughter's baby, and wants to show him their child).

The movie ends with Portman's character walking alongside the cart with the priest's body, baby in her arms, and Goya chasing after her.

The rape in the movie is offscreen, however. The scene starts with Portman completely naked and chained in the dungeon, although you only see butt shots, and her convincingly chained wrists are in front of her.

The priest comes in to "comfort her." He has her pray. She's so damn cute, naked, chained and on her knees in a praying position. The priest puts a cloak around her, but after hugging her and she starts crying, he slowly removes it, and the scene fades out with the rape implied. This scene occurs almost directly after the torture scene... so together it's pretty good... and it is Natalie Portman! Just for that I give it a B.

My Grade: B
