The Girl With the Dragon
Tattoo (2009)
This is a review of the original, Swedish version of the film starring
Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander, the androgynous goth-punk character
with the titular dragon tattoo. This is the movie based on the first
book in the late Steig Larsson's international best-selling trilogy,
and the only one that really has any GIMP. The books are sensational,
and the Swedish movies are all excellent as well.
I will not go into any great detail concerning the plot, which is a
fairly engaging murder mystery, and one of the best novel-to-movie
translations I've seen. You can find any number of Real Reviews to tell
you how awesome the movie is. I am going to concentrate on the two GIMP
bits in the movie. The set-up is this: Lisbeth Salander is a ward of
the state, and has to answer to a newly appointed guardian. He is a
sleazy pervert who demands she turn all her earnings over to him and
then he makes her perform sex acts on him whenever she wants any money.
In the first GIMPish scene, Lisbeth's first meeting with the guy when
she needs money, her
state-appointed guardian
tells her how it's going to be. He walks up behind her and slips his
hand down inside the front of her shirt and plays with her breast.
Meanwhile, he is undoing his pants with the other hand. He forces her
around to face him, takes hold of the back of her head, and forces her
to fellate him.
Lisbeth, not a woman to take this sort of thing passively, buys a small
video recorder and hides it in her purse the next time she goes over,
intending to get his sexual predation on video. Unfortunately, this
time he gets violent. He takes her completely unaware when he viciously
punches her in the face, knocking her onto the bed.
While she is stunned, he jumps on her back, reaches into the drawer and
removes handcuffs, and cuffs her wrists to the head of the bed. Then he
forces a cloth into her mouth to gag her.
He walks away and Lisbeth jumps up, kicking and struggling to escape
the bedframe. When he comes back he falls on her and loops a rope
around her ankle,
then pulls her leg straight down to the bottom of the bed and ties it
there, forcing Lisbeth onto her stomach all while she struggles
furiously.
He pulls off her panties. He takes off his pants and carefully folds
them and hangs them up, all while Lisbeth is struggling and looking
around behind her to see what he is doing.
He mounts her and brutally sodomizes her while she screams in pain.
The scene ends in mid-thrust (and mid-scream) and the next thing we see
is Lisbeth hobbling painfully home.
The scene where Lisbeth gets revenge on this guy is extremely
gratifying, and if this review was for "guys in merciless peril" I
would take the time to describe it in detail, because it is
sensational, brutal and totally cold-blooded. She did record her sodomy
at his hands, and part of her revenge is making him watch it, so we
hear parts of her rape as well during the scene.
There is also a very brief scene about 1 hour and 16 minutes into the
movie where a young woman is found dead, almost naked, and chained in a
horse stall. Shortly after that we see a crime scene photo of a
beheaded naked woman. And then again about 1 hour and 36 minutes in
there are more crime scene photos of bound dead women.
SUMMARY: Punk goth girl
Lisbeth is intimidated, humiliated, felt up, and forced to fellate her
state-appointed guardian. When she comes back next time, he punches
her, knocking her
onto the bed and stunning her. He handcuffs her to the bed, gags her
with a cloth, ties her foot to the bottom of the bed, strips off her
panties, then mounts her and brutally sodomizes her. There is also a
blink-and-you-miss-it bondage murder crime scene. And some random Noomi
Rapace nudity on three or four occasions, one during a sex scene.
This is an excellent movie from start to finish. It has two GIMP-type
scenes that are integral to the storyline. The first scene is
uncomfortable and humiliating. The second scene, in which Lisbeth is
brutally sodomized, is extremely well done. My only criticism from a
GIMP point of view is that there is no real nudity. We see a flash of
her butt from the side when her panties are ripped off, but that's it.
Still, the scene is riveting and even without nudity I would grade it a
solid B+. This
movie is available from Amazon.
This
is
the original Swedish movie with Noomi Rapace, not the 2011
American remake with Rooney Mara.
