Mainstream mini review of Downloading Nancy
This truly needs to be a "mini" review, since it would be almost impossible to give too many details without revealing what the film is about.
Nancy (played by Maria Bello) is dealing with the pain and depression of being abused as a child, and neglected as a wife. She deals with the pain and emptiness constructively by going to analysis, and self-destructively by inflicting pain upon herself by cutting herself and by finding someone on the Internet that'll pay attention to her. As I was watching the story unfold I was thinking to myself that this is sounding very familiar. Then at the beginning of the closing credits my familiarity with the story was confirmed as it stated that it was inspired by actual events.
Gimp material is fair to good depending on your viewpoint. Maria is naked and has her arms tied above her head and to the bed she’s lying on. She is threatened with a shard of broken glass, but she’s into pain and it's part of a consensual game. A game she does not have total control over.
Maria Bello
Entertainment wise: This is a very, very good movie. IMO Maria’s acting is exceptional in this one, as you can almost feel the pain and emptiness she’s portraying. It was also very intense at times, very dark, very disturbing, and very unsettling to watch. This is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but for me, I give it an A
Gimp wise: Though consensual in nature, still an interesting segment…plus nude and bound. And how often does that happen anymore in mainstreams? Grade C+
