A Bring Out the GIMP (Girls in Merciless Peril) Movie Review

A Dangerous Method

Reviewed by High Horse

How about a film review to liven up some debate? Following its recent DVD release, I managed to see David Cronenberg's latest effort this week, and (pause for effect), it contains some GIMP-age! Involving English rose Keira Knightley!

The film in question is A Dangerous Method.

A brief precis of the film is that it covers the relationship between the two 'Fathers' of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender), and Jung's affair with one of his patients, Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley). The film opens with the deranged Russian Spielrein arriving at Jung's clinic for his 'talking cure'. Now I am a big admirer of Miss Knightley, but her performance in this film is infuriating. For a start, she persists in adopting a cod Russian accent (the other characters, one Austrian, one Swiss, do not affect any accents). Secondly, her portrayal of deranged consists of sticking out her lower jaw and gurning stupidly. Fortunately, after treatment, her condition improves, and the gurning decreases. Jung is rather taken with Miss Spielrein, to the point of encouraging her to study and become a psychologist herself, and taking her on both as an assistant and as a mistress. The psychological breakthrough comes when Miss Spielrein admits to abuse by her Father, and that she can only become sexually aroused when she is humiliated and beaten. Naturally, Jung is happy to oblige, and we are treated to scenes of her being spanked (with a hand)

and also with her hands tied and whipped with a belt

Both scenes involving brief topless nudity.

The other 'GIMP' worthy scene is after Miss Spielrein has an 'episode' and runs into a pond. She is hauled out, covered in mud, and is forcibly bathed, which is quite a nice scene

Before you start thinking that this is a 'GIMP' film, it is not really. I am a big Cronenberg fan, but this is only really a moderate film in his pantheon, easily eclipsed by his previous effort, Eastern Promises, which really was a superb film. Keira Knightley's performance is pretty dreadful really; and only sterling performances by the male leads Fassbender and Mortensen save the film - they really are excellent

All in all I would rate this film as a C purely in film terms, and also as a C for the very brief moments of GIMP-age. So, recommended only for Keira Knightley fans who would get off on scenes of her spanked whilst topless (which I would guess might well be quite a few people!).

My Grade: C
