Mini mainstream review of The Collector
The Collector trailer
I wasn’t really expecting too much from this one as re-makes usually turn out to be a let down, but I was pleasantly surprised. First, it has nothing to do with the original, and so the only thing the two have in common is the title. And second, this turned out to be a pretty good and very suspenseful horror flick.
The Collector is about a construction worker who needs to raise some money in a hurry because his wife’s loan-shark payment is way past due. The construction worker is himself of questionable character as he knows exactly who to contact and how to obtain the money. With the owners of the house he’s recently been working on suppose to be out of town, he breaks in and attempts to get into the wall-safe. He soon discovers that he is not alone and that the house has booby-traps set all over the place. Set not for intruders, but to keep the inhabitants from getting out.
Gimp wise there are two scenes of some interest. The first one has the wife and mother who lives there handcuffed while lying in her bathtub. She is cleave-gagged and is duct-taped blindfolded. The scene creates some pretty nice visuals but….if she’s gonna be in a bathtub, lets get her dressed appropriately for it. She is however not nude but barefoot in a red dress.
Later the older daughter comes home and is captured after a nice little make-out session with her boyfriend. This scene had potential as while they were making out the Collector is spying upon them, pretty much licking his chops all the while. After she’s captured she gets restrained in an AOH by the staircase and has wire wrapped around her throat securing her there. The potential quickly goes down the drain as right when he starts to check out her body by lifting her shirt to peek at her breasts, he hears a noise and goes to check it out. Then of course in typical Hollywood fashion she gets rescued before he can get back and continue where he left off. And to totally kill all possibility of re-capture, she dies by tripping one of the booby-traps in her hurry to escape. So even though it seemed like we finally have a villain who’s got a set, he never gets a chance at her. Damn it Jim!
As entertainment, a very well made horror flick getting a solid grade of B+/A-
As Gimp, just so-so as a definite missed opportunity when the daughter gets killed goes down the tubes. At least it seemed like it was because the villain just didn't get a chance, and not due to his total non-interest in naked or half naked girls like the villains in other horror movies. Grade a C
